Does anyone know the type of wood used on a 1966 Mustang body ? Mine's heavily damaged and I'm trying to repair a missing piece if possible.

Thanks, I think it poplar too (wish it were mahagony !!). The stang's in about five different boxes - as soon as I get it all together I'll post her !

After looking at some of the exposed bare wood, I'm starting to think the body is mahogany. It's a really fine grain which looks a lot like some of the mahogany samples but doesn't look like any of the samples of poplar or ash I've seen on the web.

I'm thinking a restore job on the body wood be worth it after all.

I'll take it to a local wood expert to confirm the wood type.

Does anyone have a good source for mahogony ? I'll need a piece 1-1/2" x 3" x 9".

I bought it used back in 1976 and it had been stripped and repainted several times. At one point it had some type of nasty flourescent yellow color (keep in mind this was the 70's and given the hands this guitar has passed through anything was possible !).

At the moment it is black laquer which I had painted it in 1977 but it is chipping off near the belt buckle area in the back. There's a big chunk of wood missing on the bottom near the vol / tone controls and a long crack the runs along the length of the body below the neck moutning area. The crack can be fixed with glue and clamping but I'll need to replace the missing chunk.

The neck has a lot of wear on it from many years of playing. This is not a museum piece but it has a ton of character and sentimental value to me. I have a '91 Strat Plus which I use as my go to guitar and would really like to fix up the Stang for my son and I to play.

I have a limted amount of time to play with it but I'll try to strip the existing paint off it and post some pixs.

It's great to see so much support for thew Mustang series.
