Hiya,

Need some help; I have a 1981 HM Strat & am currently in the process of refurbishing it. It only has a single Humbucker & want a replacement, but I’m not sure if it is F spaced or not.

Although I have been playing for 20 years I don’t actually know much about the electrics etc.

Can some one tell if the HM Strat is F spaced or where you take the measurement from?

The original Humbucker was wired up with the option of single or twin.

Also suggestions for the replacement too, Although its a HM Strat I like to play all kinds of music, Some of my influences are Clapton, Page, BB King, Mustaine, Hammet, Vai. Just a few.

I feel more drawn to a nice fat crisp sound.

Welcome.

It is "F" or "Trembucker" spaced. You can also use a Gibson bridge model humbucker as those designated as such have the identical spacing as a DiMarzio "F" spaced pickup.

You will get as many opinions on what would be the perfect pickup for you as there are stars in the sky. All responses are well meaning but each player sounds different even on the identical guitar and amp. See, if I recommended what I thought would suit your needs the best, although these would work great for me, not only is it 50/50 whether any or all would work for you, but other players who have experience with my suggested pickups would think my recommendations are utterly preposterous per their experience. Conversely, I could feel the same way about their suggestions as well. So, you would have to go to say, Duncan's, DiMarzio's and whoever else's manufacturers' websites along with demonstrations on YouTube, etc. and start listening for yourself and narrow it down. From there, if you have specific questions about the specific models, we could better advise you in a more symposium type discussion.

Be aware that not all Fender guitars have pickups that line up under the strings, in fact it's quite possible the original humbuckers didn't. As an example my mid 80's Fender Bullet "1" Tele HSS like every other example I've seen to this day had a bridge humbucker who's poles didn't line up under the strings. This occurred with both the Strat and Tele shaped HSS models. If it bothers you you can always search "black metal humbucker cover" either on google or ebay and install it easily. Additionally I haven't noticed any negative results from the non-aligned humbucker in my Bullet "1" in fact it roars. I believe this pickup condition was present in both Japan and Korean made Fenders of the era that your Fender HM was manufactured.

I own an HM single pup too! Mine is a 1989 that I got for my birthday that same year. It's nice to see someone else besides me has one of these guitars. Check out this website for some good HM info http://www.heavymetalstrat.com/

The bridge pickup in HM Strats is a DiMarzio Super 3. I checked the DiMarzio website, but it doesn't say whether or not it's F spaced. Maybe shoot an email or call DiMarzio customer service.

Sorry I don't know what to suggest for a replacement pickup. I still have the stock DiMarzio in mine.

p.s. You don't have a 1981. HM Strats didn't come out until 1988.

Though I don't have an answer to most of your questions, I also have an HM Strat, and did a refin on it along with Pickup replacement.

I currently have a Dimarzio D Activator in the bridge.
I like it alright, but may try something different down the road.

Forget the Epiphone, those are not good guitars, and even if you were lucky and have a passable one, it's not really suited for jazz, it's too aggressive.
