I have an old steel guitar that i'm trying to learn to play, (most steel players would call it an antique.) It is a Fender 400 with the sunburst pattern, and 4 pedals. The neck is the 23" scale and the pedals are plated, the serial no. is 01599. It also has the pickup with round ends. Thanks for any help.

Your guitar was made at the
Fullerton Plant (Fender - Pre CBS Era), USA
in the Year(s): 1954

I posted over at the Steel Guitar Forum on a link about the Fender 400 guitars. Evidentaly, you can tell nothing from serial nos. The early models (58-mid63),had 24.5" neck, plated pedals, rectangular pickups, non roller nut, and wire loop changers. The later models had 23' neck, black pedals, roller nut, and jaguar type pickup. They also had an improved changer. Evidentally, mine is a transition model(but not valuable). I don't care, I hope to be able to play it properly someday, just for the fun of it.

I am re-opening this 5 year old thread in hopes that someone can help me with a similar situation.
I have what I am 99% sure is a Fender Pedal 400, and I am trying to find out as much as I can about it. I don't know where it came from or anything about its history, other than the former owner's family remembers him playing it as far back as at least the mid 1970s.

Here is what I know about it that hopefully might help identify:
- fret board is 23 inches
- roller nut
- rectangular pickup
- blond finish
- black pedals
- serial number is 01743

There are no clear dates written under the tuning pan, just a circled "OK" ink stamp and what appears to be handwritten initial "M" and/or a number "8".

If anybody has links or sources where I can find any information on this guitar, or ideas of what it might be, its vintage, opinions about desirability of this particular model vs others, etc. - any help at all is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

You might try here, but it would seem you have a '63 or later model.
