Agree with rabmag, jeffnles1 and Firewall. I've been at this since 1964 and have bunches of guitars ( appreciate the reference to days when the old fingers don't want to work). I have in my collection a faded-cherry sunburst Squier Standard and a Daphne Blue (actually closer to surf green) Bullet. I bought them mainly because I liked the aesthetics, and they cost less than I spend on lunches in a month. They cost about the same as many same market instruments in the 60s; Teisco, Norma, Kay, Harmony, etc., and are much higher quality. After a set-up, and with a set of good strings, they sound and play fine. And are a whole lot of fun.
Guitargirl93, you have gotten a lot of good advice here. Find someone to set-up your Squiers, and start saving for a good amp. Don't over look strings. Try different ones until you find what works best for you.

My mother owns a Squire Bullet and despite playing left handed I've picked it up a few times and it's not horrible. What it really lacks are options and quality tones, but I'm the kind of guy who obsesses over effects and the uniqueness of a guitar sound. If you replaced the pickup with something that has a better tonal range the guitar would be in great shape. Like others have said spend your money on a good amp. I've found Vox tube amps sound great with Fenders, especially my Mexican Telecaster.

Interestingly enough I just bought a Squire Vintage Modified Jazz Bass yesterday to open my self up to bass playing and I have to say it sounds pretty amazing for a 330 dollar bass guitar. When you're just getting into playing guitar the best thing you can spend your money on is lessons and a great sounding amp. Find a guitar you can look at every day, play every day and not have to tune every day.

squiers are pretty good guitars and so are MIMs Fenders. You can also try to get a used american standard fender.

Classic player strats and standards are pretty good guitars for the money

Oh I know that's the truth, but I'm not Robert Johnson in a small room down in Mississippi either! I don't have those chops but would give my left nut to have them! Those recordings all would take place in a matter of hours with single takes. No re-takes and delete, cut, and paste of today! Simply Amazing!

But I still love my guitars!

this has all been very interesting to read. For my 2 cents i just throw it out that ive had all manner of guitars on my journey of wankerdom and the i have my share of 100$ pawn shop scores. i had an old hondo flying V that i played the hell out of for years. Its real easy to get caught up in the gear and forget about the playing. Im definitely as guilty of this as anyone else. not pointing fingers etc. My current ridiculousness is that im playing my main street guitar company Tele knockoff over my gibson les paul right now. why? beats the hell out of me. just diggin on it.Just get out there and dig on whacha diggin on. when you play enough and get to a point when you can actually feel your instrument holding you back then its time to upgrade.
cheers
