I would say go for a MIM Fender Strat or a "higher end" Squire. Anything above 200$. Alot of Squires are really low quality... except for the Jagmaster.

Not exactly..... Sometimes you get a bad one, sometimes you get a good one.
You really can't make that bold of a statement and say it's quality across the board like that. I'm not completly disagreeing with you, but even some of the $99 Bullets are pretty nice.
You can get bad ones and good ones.
Get what you like and what you can afford.

It really is relative.-JMHO-N 8)

A couple comments which have always served me well in this situation:

"Believe me when I say that some of the most amazing music in history was made on equipment that's not as good as what you own right now." - Jol Dantzig

"You can't compare these guitars and those guitars. Only this guitar and that guitar." - Smokestack

Speaking for MYSELF and not having anyone else presume what I'm saying or thinking, it is this:

MANY Squiers are excellent PLAYING guitars. Now, without getting into a big long list of deficiencies such as but not limited to, a very soft string nut, inevitable fret sprout, necks that will not fully straighten properly, porous hardware and 'light duty' electronics, let's just say that in effect, you will be owning two beginners level guitars. Of note is the fact that oftentimes, the people who vehemently defend this line as better than or equal to ANYTHING out there are usually the ones who CAN'T AFFORD better and so they must rationalize and defend the Squier line. Notwithstanding, the reality remains, they are what they are.

As to snobbery, I don't care if a guitar was made on the moon. If it is a superior instrument, I'd play it.

Yes , I agree with U, I purchased a Fender Squier Stratocaster Fat Strat in 2002 , which has the two single coils and a Humbucker at the bridge. THis guitar sounds awesome. Now guys have told me the 2002 Squier Strat is the best years for a Squier Strat. I dont know if that is true,I dont know much about the Fender Squier products. 8)

Unless your "plain ole lil squire" is a Starcaster, I'm not sure that the Bullet would be an upgrade. If you have an Affinaty model now then you are already a step above the Bullet. If you have a Standard then the Bullet would be a definte step down.

Basically, if you tried playing a Bullet and liked it better than the Squier you have now then I would guess that your guitar needs to go to the shop for some work. Unless you have a Starcaster or the Bullet you tried had been upgraded.

My suggestion would be to have your guitar checked out by a decent tech -if you thought a Bullet was an upgrade than your guitar might have some issues. Usually is cheaper to fix issues than to buy a new guitar. And most Bullets need a setup right out of the box to get them to play decent.

I agree with this suggestion. I wouldn't recommend a beginner get an expensive guitar because as they progress in skill, so does their preference for what a guitar should play and feel like. If you spend $1500-$2000 on a Custom Shop or American Strat and later discover you prefer thick/thin neck, tall/short frets, or various other aesthetic things, i.e. poly vs. nitro, etc. then you're in the hole making those modifications to your guitar.

While I do agree pickups make a huge bit of difference, I'd also say that Amplifier + effects pedals(if you use them) makes even more of a difference. I'd rather play a cheap guitar through a good amplifier than a $5,000 Masterbuilt CS guitar through a cheap amplifier.

Save up for a good amplifier and effects pedals if you plan to use them!

So the squire bulet is not great and i bet the guitar you had before was even worse, so your saying that you are going from poop to less poop... Sort of.

Guys,
90% of a guitar's tone is in the fingers of the player.

I have expensive (over $5,000 Martin acoustics), mid priced (American Strats) and lower end (MIM Strats, Epiphone LP, Yamaha Acoustics) and let me be the first to say, on any given day, I'm going to play better than on any other day and the guitar in my hands does not have a lot to do with it. When the arthritis in acting up in my fingers, it doesn't matter what I'm playing, I'm going to sound horrible.

If the young lady in the original post is a talented musician, she's going to make pretty music with any guitar in her hands. If she has the sense of rythm of a log, a 5,000 hand built custom shop Strat is going to sound like poo when she's playing it.

I've listened to my own recordings and unless I can remember specifically which guitar I was playing I'd be hard pressed to know if it was one of my more expensive ones or one of the lower priced ones.

One of my buddies could probably make better music slapping a piece of firewood with a brick than the majority of people on this forum regardless of how expensive the guitar in their hands was.

It's mostly in the player. We can fool ourselves all we want, but an expert palyer is going to sound good on any guitar and a hack like me is going to sound like a hack even when playing a high end instrument.

Jeff
