I have a Lead II ('79-80), swapped the pickups out for DiMarzio's (SDS-1@ bridge, Super 2 @ neck), plus I put a Tonestyler on it. I'm enjoying the sound, and it always played well. (I kept the original parts, just in case they someday become valuable, but I'm not holding my breath.)

I have owned a lead 111 since 1982 or 83,its been a great guitar.I've only refinished it and put the guts back in. Probably ruined the resale value but it's not for sale. So I could care less about dollars and cents, It's still playing enjoyment for me. Elliot Easton played a lead11 on MTV tears ago so the "lead" line of fenders can't be all that bad! billy s

I have a Lead 1 from circa 1982. I bought it new at Don Wehr's Music City, S F. It's as close to mint as you will find. One ding. I'll post extensive close-up photos if you like. Though criticized for its pickup arrangement, it's a classic design body-wise. More comfortable than a Tele and smaller than a Strat. Like all Fenders, indestructible. I also have the original 'manual', necessary to figure out the switching, even for a one-pickup.

I have a Lead II, and it's my go-to axe...I absolutely love it. It just had the sound I was looking for....kind of mustang meets strat. I would love to try one of the Lead III's with the 2 humbuckers, just to hear what they sound like. I found a thread in a forum once that said those humbuckers were designed by Seth Lover, but I could never verify that info, so I'm not sure. I did some research years ago to try and find out more about the Leads, but there wasn't a lot of info at the time..I haven't looked around much lately. If I had an overabundance of cash laying around, I'd have one of each. I know as far as value is concerned they currently don't bring much given the fact it's been over 25 years since production and they were made in the USA. Love the neck on mine!

This is my Fender Lead II (possibly 1979 or 1980). I bought it ten years ago in Paris, it was transparent red but was totally repainted in vintage blonde, after an incident a few years ago, which makes it less desirable for collectors, but I don't really care about that, cause I haven't planned to sell mine.

It's my go-to guitar, it has everything I could expect, a neck that perfectly fits my hand, a gorgeous neck pick up, the sound is juicy and rich. My other favourite position is both pick-ups with phase in, it almost sounds like a Telecaster but with more mids. Except the painting it's all original and I can't see anything which would deserve to be replaced on it.

I bought it because it sounded far better than all the Japanese Strats and Teles - actually, I wanted to buy myself a Tele, at the time. It sounded less defined and precise than on an American Strat (circa 1990s) but sounded much warmer, and that's what made me buy it.

And also, I'd like to let you know that there's a french site devoted to Fender Lead II.
http://jfetdel.free.fr/lead/
Maybe it has to be completed, I don't know if it's still alive cause I sent the webmaster my pics and he hasn't published them so far.

Ah ah ah ...

Hey, blue mercedes, did you remove your post because I did so ??
Well, I'm sorry I thought I got it all wrong about the phase switch on the Lead II - I've spent my life being reproached my statements and opinions on various music forums - ... so let me restate it here :

Everybody says the phase switch works only when both pick up are selected ... but I found it doubtful. I have the impression that the sound of my neck pick up used alone is much warmer when I put the phase switch down. Am I deaf ?

I'd like to benefit from other Lead II owners's experiences.

So, again, sorry for having removed my post ...

grasshopper, I don't know about the Lead II but I think the following statement (from the website mentioned) for the Lead I is true:
Quote:
Lead I, 1979-1982: A single specially designed bridge position split humbucker (Seth Lover designed). 3 position coil selector switch (single coil, both coils, single coil), 2 position humbucker series-parallel select switch which operates only when both coils are selected (middle position). Master Volume and Tone Control.

I haven't played my Lead I in a while but do know that there are some switch positions that yield no sound, something I was always puzzled about.
In any case, I've had Les Paul Recording Model; 330TD; Firebird; 2 Telecasters; Stratocaster; tortoise shell Dobro; DuoSonic; over the past 40 years and I like the overall design of the Lead best. Fender could reissue this with a new name and a couple TexMex pickups, sell it for $400 and I think they'd have a winner. I'd snap a 3-tone sunburst one of those up in a second! As a matter of fact, put me down for serial number 000000001!
