Guitar buffers are always handy to have around. Most effect pedals can act as a guitar buffer, and so you can plug an effect pedal into any standard lower-impedance line-input (including your home-stereo CD/Aux inputs).

However, I like the idea of having one which I can customize and will run on say a single set of 6V (4) rechargeable batteries for a LONG time (not a 9V cell).

So here is a design note on a simple design. It contains a bit of background info on pickups and impedance stuff along with some simple modelling of pickups and amplifiers:

Not bad, it is a simple design. Back then I use a high impedance buffer. Usually for feeding ceramic cartridges it to guitar amps.

Just an FET (2N3819 or similar), a 1K resistor from source to 0V, a 2.2M resistor from gate to 0V, and +9V to the drain. Input to the gate, and output from the source - via a coupling capacitor if needed (it's often not).
