Ok, I admit fender, especially electrics are not my forte. Most of the stuff
I collect are old Martins,or Guilds. Other than that it's all violins, cellos, or
upright bass. My question is this. I have recently aquired a 1964 Mustang.
The neck seems to have backbow to it and the truss seens to be runout.
In the past, with some of my other instruments that do not have trussrods or frets for that matter, I have been able to steam them and lock them
into a jig and straighten them. Has anyone ever attempted this with a trussed neck, and if not I would value any oppinion as in the short time I have been visiting this forum, I have found everyone to be absolutely
outstanding

Welcome.

I use a neck heater myself, specifically designed for this purpose. I set the rod at a more realistic point. Meaning, not runout but approximately to where it would be on a 'healthy' neck. I then clamp the neck under pressure to the heater with strategically placed wood standoffs which straightens the neck under pressure right where it is needed the most but I 'overdo' it ever so slightly. In this case, I'd put a tiny bow warp to allow for when the clamps are released. The heater is temperature controlled (240 deg. F) and I heat the neck for say, 15 minutes. What it does is it heats and loosens the glue joint between the neck and fingerboard and allows the board to slip into place, now straightened. I then unplug the heater and allow everything to cool down.

I s this heater you use somthing I can buy, or make? And where would I get one? I'm not so sure I want to try my method on a guitar, as it would require removing the fret board and I don't want to risk damage.

I bought it YEARS ago from an outright luthier's supply house. I did notice that they hadn't carried it for years since though.

The following link is one similar to mine but not exactly the same:

Hope this helps.
