try a DOD death metal distortion (discontinued, but findable)
i use mine with all my guitars, from a les paul goldtop no-cut, my destroyer, a cyclone, and even a tele, and with just a turn of your volume knob, you can get everything from full on metal to grunge, to even a funky overdriven sound

The perfect pedal is a Pro Co Rat. I have gone through so many distortion pedals and this one is the one. You can do anything with it.

+1
The Rat's a great standard distortion and I think it sounds best with single coils. Definitly worth checking out.

i dunno if you could really get a good grunge distortion out of the ratt though, maybe like a pearl jam type tone, but that's really more blues based alt-rock type sound.
the dod grunge would be a good one i would imagine

Mudhoney used stock mustangs and they were fond of the Superfuzz and EH Big Muff. You can't get too much more grunge than Mudhoney.

I like the Electro-Harmonix Bigg Muff Pi or the Fender Blender, They're both cool distortion pedals.

Check out the boss distortion pedals. Those are the ones Kurt Cobain used live and in the studio. It might be a good idea to try them out before you buy one. If you are able to, take your guitar and your amp to the store and tell them you want to test the pedals out before you buy one to make sure its going to work for you. Different distortion pedals are going to sound different with different setups. Hope that helps.

Cobain used the ds-1 one some. if you get one spend the extra money and get a keeley modded one. just sent mine to them to get done. I would also recommend a Boss bd-2 great for a marsahll blues rock sound, which is very mike mcready!! I like the rat for some things, also like my mustagn throught a pair of tube screamers, but i love all guitars through a pair of tube screamers!!

I'm still using the dod grunge distortion. I run that thru an eq filter to tweak the tone so I can get just the right ferquencies on the high end coming out of my humbuckers. I've heard about the rat distortion that is supposed to be the most versatile. There are some pretty cool looking tube driven distortion pedals too that are a little more expensive but I'm sure you can hear the difference.

I agree! The Grunge pedal puts out some absolutely snarling sounds. I use it for punk, metal, and ambient feedback sounds...A very underrated distortion pedal. I've owned $150 distortion pedals that couldn't touch it.

Let me add to those who say the DS-1.

I had the pedal before I bought my Mustang in 81, so it wasn't due to any desire to copy anybody. I bought the DS-1 because I tried it and it worked for my other guitar. I discovered it worked well for the Mustang also.

Ultimately, though, it's up to your ears.
