Hello,

another question from me. I want to spend around 2.500 US dollars for a Jazzmaster. Vintage would be nice, but it's a bit out of my prince range.

I've been looking for a various kinds of them and what came to my mind was EC Signature Model, 62 Vintage Reissue one, and of course Classic Player and MIJ and CIJ.

What is your opinion? Is it better to get a brand new one, or save some more (let's say 3.500 US dollars) and buy a vintage? I know the classic sound is a classic sound, but I've never played one, so it's hard to tell for me really. I just want a nice Jazzmaster, great tone.

What is your experience with eBay? I'm not from the US, and I feel the shippment is kind of risky.

Thanks

Hi,
if it's a JM you want and you're looking for the classic sound then buy a new American Vintage 62 Reissue from your nearest Fender Dealer. Don't save up for vintage, the new AVRI is just as good, and better than some of the old JMs in my experience. I was sharing a friend's '61 Jazzmaster for years before I bought an AVRI. Once I had the AVRI we tried both guitars side by side straight into the same vintage tube amp - and there was almost no difference in tone at all. The AVRI was a little louder, and a little brighter than the '61 - consistent with the difference in age of the electronics. Both sounded like fine Jazzmasters. The diff between a very good vintage JM and a new AVRI is not worth the extra $ if you just want to play it. If you're collecting, or really want a vintage Fender of course that's different.

As for the Japanese made JMs they have different pickups and different pots and caps, and do not sound the same. They sound thinner, sharper and not as high output. Not bad guitars, although the cheaper trem assembly lets the arm fall out constantly, which doesn't happen on the US made ones.

The Elvis sig model is sweet, sounds and plays nice, and is definitely a JM. It'd say the Fender Japan ones are JM shaped electrics, but they don't have the sound.

From what I've heard the AVRI Jazzmaster is very true to the original in tone and feel a pre CBS 60s Jazzmaster will set you back anywhere from $3700-$5000 for a sunburst and quite a bit more for rare or custom colours.
