I mainly collect and have several of each brand that you mentioned. They are all great lookers and players in my opinion and play better than I do. However, I just purchased a Epi LP Blackback and am blown away with the beauty of this guitar. The workmanship is perfect, and it looks and plays like 5x what it costs. You might look into one and see if it suits your tastes. Don't be influenced by where a guitar is made, Fender in Mexico, PRS in Korea, or Epi in China. Each country is capable of making whatever they are contracted to manufacture.

I have two recent PRS SEs (Soapbar II and Custom 24) and the quality is fabulous. They are flawless. One has a wide fat neck and the other is a much slimmer profile (for those people who insist on measuring their hands..)

But really, the quality of a Std Strat and Tele are pretty much on a par too, (although I think the PRSs just have the edge) And the Fenders are cheaper than the SEs too.

I think with either brand you can't go wrong. In each case you'll get a good, solid, reliable working guitar. I'll remain discretely quiet about the Epis, except to say that you need to buy the better models for comparable quality.

I have a 1986 MIJ Squier Stratocaster and a 1992 Epiphone Les Paul Custom. I can’t speak on PRS guitars as I have never played them. Honestly, it has more to do with what you want to hear and your playing style. The strat was my main guitar for years when I was playing country and classic rock. I did find if I wanted to play anything heavier, the single coils were a bit on the thin side. I was routinely being buried by my rhythm guitarist who was playing through a matching amp, only difference was his guitar had a humbucker. For this reason, I installed a DiMarzio fast track II in the bridge position. This helped output wise however, it still didn’t sound as beefy as I wanted. That’s when I started thinking of buying another guitar.
I ran the gamut of “hotrod” strats, explorers, even an iceman or two still, nothing felt or sounded right. It came time for the band I was in to record some demo tracks and a friend of ours suggested I try a couple of songs with his Les Paul Custom. That was all I needed. I had found running the LP through my normal setup sounded incredibly crunchy and thick as a brick wall.
As far as durability, I have had no problems with either guitar that wasn’t maintenance related (frets worn, a scratchy pot here, adjusting the intonation there). The only real replacements I’ve had to do was replacing the input jacks on both guitars after they had sat for a while.
I must say in the last few years I have bought some “stinker” Epiphone Les Pauls. They were both quilt tops, kinda like a standard model. They both didn’t sound so great, both had open coil humbuckers. One I couldn’t get to stay in tune for the life of me. I ended up selling that one… and the other I put EMG Zakk Wylde active pickups in…sounded great thereafter.
Anyway, that’s my take on things. It’s all about what is pleasing to your ear. My advice is to try out as many guitars as you can and choose the one you like most.
