Hi all,
Im saving up for a new guitar (as mabe a next year birthday present (april) to myself). Im still out in the open, but Ive kind of loosely decided on a standard fender tele or strat ($550) (possibly a used mexi strat for 200), a PRS soapbox single cutaway (I forget the price I believe about 500), an epi les paul standard plain top (500), and an epi les paul 56 goldtop (500). Does anyone have an opinion on any of these? Thanks,

Simply put I would go with the PRS single cut. The lower end mexistrats electronics aren't all that impressive and I've heard too many bad things about lower end epiphone lespauls. I've owned the PRS single cut SE and the quality of the build is MUCH better than the other two. It was great for rocking but I wanted a jazzier sound so I sold it for the 72' thinline telecaster. Really The PRS entry models are just superior than your other options. You'll have a good selection of sounds because of the 25'' scale length and p-90's. Mine had great depth and harmonics, yours will probaly have even more interesting sounds because of p90's. Also have you seen them? Absolutely beautiful. Post some picks if you get the PRS!

Very different guitars.
I have a modded Std Strat, a HWY1 Tele and a PRS SE Custom 22 and I like them all for different reasons, different tones, different feel, different personalities. Go with what feels best to you.
I wouldn't go with an Epi in the same price range, tho.

I'm mainly judging on the basis of quality than sound for (and I'm just assuming this) a starter guitar.Don't get me wrong but the quality of the build in this range is just better on the PRS SE models than the other options. As far as sounds go you can get a good variety sounds from them. But I do agree op should go and try all of them out.

Either way you're getting a good guitar,I have 7 Fenders and love them all and 5 Eppys and nomatter what other people may say about Eppys being junk all of mine sound and play great and my 65 John Lennon Casino is one of the finest guitars I've ever played. As for PRS their reputation alone says enough about the quality.Again it all boils down to buying what feels and sounds best for what you play.

I personally would go with the gibsons I love both guitars ,but I always tend to go back to my Les paul. It generally comes down to which guitar feels the best in your hands and what kind of tone your looking for

I like Fenders. I have yet to find a neck that fits my hands better.

No, I've played many though. I also learned to play on a Fender. But I really like the thicker Fender necks. They fit so well in my large hands. I'll go get a ruler and measure my hands.

Can you explain how and exactly where you got those measurements so we can compare?

The beginning of the wrist to the tip of the middle finger, across the palm, and in between the thumb and index (the meaty part of the hand.)
