Eastwood Guitars makes one for $300 that looks pretty cool:

These are fun to play, and I did consider getting one at one point.

The Fender Mandocaster however was a 4 string instrument, and not Tele shaped.

This is what they looked like0-

I had the pleasure of playing around with one a few days ago and got interested in it. The shape is like a miniature Strat, right down to the Contour Body decal. Very high tone and great action.

Here is a youtube video of a very young Billy Ray Cyrus playing the Mandocaster.

Pics of my all original CAR 69 via the link below (the pics come up in the reverse order to that which I intended!)

Custom finishes on the mandolin from this era are mega rare, almost all were 'burst.

Interestingly, the obviously purpose made case carries the '66 type logo, as opposed to what would have been used in '69. It seems very likely that Fender ordered a batch of these cases in 66, & due to the slow sales of the instrument, were still using these into the 70's?

If you're lucky enough to find a real vintage one, it won't be cheap :

I noticed that they are releasing a mando-strat. Anyone know anything about it? Where is it made?

The original mandocaster featured a gold anodized pickguard and a 1-piece maple neck:
