Hello...

My six year-old son and I have decided to try to learn guitar and bass. I've played the drums for 20 some-odd years and have managed to learn a thing or two about music (as much as you can teach any drummer...), but I'm pretty new to the world of stringed instruments.

My son has a brand new Squire Mini-strat. I can tune the three lower pitched strings pretty consistently, but I cannot tune the higher three for anything!
I don't know if there's a problem with the strings, the basic set-up of the guitar itself..or what. I do have some high-frequency hearing problems...maybe it's that, but I can't get those strings in tune even with an electronic tuner.
Any ideas?
thanks
-Mike

Take it to a guitar shop and get it setup and have them show you a few things about setting intonation and your action and whatnot.

I've heard of problems with tuning and short-scale guitars but this sounds a bit out of the ordinary. It should at least GET in tune. Maybe with some intonation issues but should tune. Maybe just haven't cranked them tight enough? The first time I tuned by myself I thought sure the 3 high strings were going to break before they got sharp enough to be in tune. With a short-scale that perception could be more noticable. Or could be more likely to break so could go either way.

I bought 3 mini Squire Strats for all my grandsons this Christmas and had to fiddle with them for proper settings.. takes lots of patience and re-tuning till the strings all stretsch. I overtune then undertune several timess on the G- Low E strings... and then again today had to do it all over before achieving a good setup.

Being new with new strings everything has to aclumate to the surroundings before it really settles in.

Of course keeping it in tune after the Grandsons start hacking around on them is yet another challange!

Is it the tuners? I just bought a Squier Mini Strat from 2002, and it appears to have different tuners than the stock tuners, and it stays in tune. If you get different tuners for them, they might stay in tune. I recommend mini Grovers or Schaller tuners.

i really dont think its the tuners if youre new at this. have you tried setting it up? take it to a shop.. if the guitar is new the first thing you should do is set up the action and the bridge saddles

make sure that you have a heavy set of string on the mini.

I got this off another forum and sounds strange but works. The chords actually sound correct. I just bought my 6 year old son a Squier mini and have spent the last two nights setting it up...strings, saddle adjustments and intonation. I could get it tuened but chords would sound horrible. It does need new tuners...trying to find decent close to drop ins, and will buy new saddles but this trick seems to work.

Tune the guitar a 1/2 step sharp. For example, if you are using a chromatic tuner, play an Ab (which is the 4th fret on the low E string), and tune it until your tuner reads "A"

If you have .09 or .10 guage strings then tunning up to G or Ab will deffinately help with the Low E stability and tunnings, otherwise use a heavier guage string SET to get more tension on the low E.

How ever your problem is with the High E B G so i would assume that it is probably fretting out when played open causing "harmonic" note interference. This would be due to action being too low or strumming way too hard while tunning.

My 3yr old daughters Squire Mini is tuned to G with .09s and then the LOW E is retuned to "DROP D" style in the G tunning so that she can learn and play with one finger chords.

The stock tuners on these are kind of crap. Not a bad little guitar otherwise. Just replaced the tuners on my sons. Go here if you want to check it out;

The 9s are too flimsy, will probably try with 10s or 11s.

If only someone would invent some kind of electronic tuner, nah, that wouldn't work...

Minnesota! Its not getting to tune, but staying there that is the problem. Those Gibson Robot Tunning Pegs would work in this scenario constantly adjusting string pitch to stay in tune.
