I just bought a nice '85-'86 Performer. It has a flakey neck pickup that works fine in split coil mode, but intermittent (mostly non-working) in humbucking mode. I pulled off the pickguard just to visually check the wiring to see if I could see anything that looked off. I noticed that there were two black leads, one orange lead, and one white lead coming from each of the two pickups. The way this is wired has the orange and white wires from the bridge pickup soldered together and going to the coil splitter switch, one black wire to the pickup selector and one black wire to ground. The two black wires from the neck pickup are soldered together and going to the coil splitter switch, white wire to ground and orange wire to pickup selector. This wiring doesn't make sense to me. Shouldn't the wires twisted together and going to the splitter switch be the same colors from both pickups (either orange and white from both pickups or both blacks from both pickups)? Are there any Performer owners out there who have looked at the pickup wiring inside their guitars that could verify that this is correct? I've looked all over the Internet for wiring diagrams or color code charts for the Performer pickups, but they just don't seem to be out there. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome!

People do wacky things with the innards of their guitars. Oftentimes, there's no rhyme or reason to it. In this case, the only thing I can figure is that the previous owner was trying to make that neck pickup a bit thinner by defeating the full power of the pickup. Again though, who knows?

Try rewiring that neck pickup with the same color coding as your bridge pickup and you should be good to go.

Thanks for the welcome and the suggestion. I pulled everything apart this morning and my worst fear was realized. One of the coils in the neck pickup has an open. With these pickups, the coils are not accessible, as they fill the covers with resin, which completely encapsulates the pickup. Needless to say, I'm stuck with a single coil neck pickup, and not even a proper one at that. Seeing as how this is a special pickup with an angled shape, I guess I'm SOL unless I can find something on Ebay. If anyone hears of some Performer pickups or a beater Performer up for sale, let me know! Take care all.

Hey there. I got one of these as a kid, and within a few years, had pretty much destroyed it. I do, however, still have one of the pickups for it. I had it in a frankenstrat a number of years ago, and it worked fine then. Lemme know if you are interested in buying it. Thanks, Gearjunkie35.

I know this is kind of a late reply, but if you still have the pickup, and it's in good cosmetic shape and working order, let me know how to reach you.
