Here's a puzzle for you JM heads... one of these is an all original 1961, one is a AVRI from 2004, one is a CIJ about the same age.
Who can pick which one is which?

and yes, they're all played in the same band :)

Lets see... one on the left is Orginal '61, the front right is the '04 AVRI and the one in the back is the CIJ?

you got it, dead right!
yeah the original is easy to spot, and the CIJ just has something too white and plasticy about the pickup covers...

good on you, me too.
I always thought they were clunky junk, years ago an older friend lent me a pre-CBS Jag, 'keep hold of it as long as you like, play it at gigs, I don't use it anymore'... What a chance huh? I was 17 and into Sabbath and gave it back within about a week!
fool, fool  wish i had it now...

the '61 JM in that photo is the one that sold me. Again, it's been on long term loan to a guy I've been in bands with forever. As often happens with 2 guitarists who hit the road and record together for years you play each other's guitars (sometimes each other's girlfriends - but that's another story) and you influence each other in all kinds of ways. After a few years of picking up that '61 more and more often I just realized one day I'd fallen in love with it and NEEDED one of my own. So I got the AVRI. Still my number one guitar. We did an A/B test with the '61, both in the same amp, same cable etc. There wasn't much in it at all. Mine was a little louder and a little brighter - just a little. It can't touch the feel of the '61 tho.

Damn! That's a tragedy, but we have to live in the real world huh? I bought a beautiful '76 black Tele in a hock shop in LA in the 90s for $600, it felt like it had been played every day of it's life, real beaten up but a fantastic guitar, all original, with the case. I toured it around Europe for 18 months, recorded two albums with it... then had to sell it for a plane ticket back to Australia!

I also wanted a Les Paul since I was a kid, the 'dream guitar', took years and years til I could buy one I liked, and within a year I sold it for an airfare to go back to Europe and tour (again.. you start broke and have to get to the gig to earn the bread right...) The Paul was the guitar I used least in the band, I had a strat and a Gibson ES135 that did most of the work, so it got sacrificed.

I don't miss the Paul but I wish I never had to sell that Tele. I got three times what I paid for it, but in an ideal world I'd rather have the guitar. It would cost me a lot more than 600 bucks to get the same one now :!:

Tragic how the world works. It's awful. I hate getting rid of it... but I kind of have to. If I could get the money another way... that would be great! Ha. But I can't... I wish I had the money for a damn Gibson ES-335. THAT is my dream guitar. Man!

Hold on to that dream then. Anyways, there are a lot of Jazzmasters out there now, they make more now than ever before - so you can get one when times are good, or maybe that 335. The guitar you have to wait and save and struggle for is the one you really bond with.

Sweet surf green JM! Congrats, looks good enought to eat. I had a real prob choosing between Olympic White, Surf Green and Black. I got the white, but I still get itchy when I see a cool Surf or Black JM.

Thanks guys! ..Im very disappointed in Fender, removing a few colors
from the AVRI line-up, including surf green & doubled the price.. Not cool
for John Q. Public!

I waited 5 months for Fender to make that guitar back in 2007.
Soon after I got it, Surf Green was gone from the website!
