Hi

I was wondering how I can date my Musicmaster bass. Hope someone can help.

I've had it for about 15 years and have never found out when it was made! I know it's likely to be early seventies because of the tulip shaped machine heads but other than that I've no clue.

The serial number on the plate on the back says 318556.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Shelley

I looked but I can't find the proper chart anymore online. I actually sent an email to Fender at one time to verify the date on my Montara A/E guitar.

On the headstock of your Musicmaster, like mine, there should be a serial number. That number will indicate the date. I think the the "S" and the "8" on mine are what indicated it was made in '78.

Got photos of your Musicmaster?

Here's a photo that shows the headstock and the number I was referring to you.

That neck plate shows the guitar has 1971 birth date.

Thanks for the quick replies.

Atolleter - Yes I was thinking it was 71 too as I saw another with a similar start to the serial no.

WI KissFan - The older ones don't have a serial number on the headstock. I also wrote to Fender about 14 years ago to ask them to date it for me and got no reply! They're sweet little basses aren't they. Mine really deserves to be played more often!

Welcome. They are nice little guitars, I have a 6 string 1976 myself that I enjoy playing from time to time.

Yes, sweet basses to be sure. My Musicmaster is my workhorse bass. I have an SX that's a backup, it's nice but not the same.
