I'm pretty sure it's normal. I have a '66 RI and it does the same thing. I've always wondered if someone has magnetized their bridge/tremolo arm? or would it interfere with the pickups?

It's a friction fit in a collet, like a big pin vise.

If you open the instrument up you can take the arm out, gently pinch the collet vise and insert it. The arm will still flop around, but not fall out.

Do you have a Q-Series CIJ Jazzmaster? I have the same problem with my '03. I bought an aftermarket whammy bar and it just hangs down and swings back and forth. It does the job most of the time unless I need to grab it quickly. The Japanese bars are different from the American versions. I wrapped tape around the end to give it a larger diameter. It worked for a while, but I don't have a permanent fix for it.
