hi crazyguitar.

well first things first, this guitar has been discontinued for some time now. so i can't imagine you finding a NEW one.

also there were many didfferent models of the toronado. there was the original model that came out in 1998 with the cyclone known as the deluxe series. these came black, white, burst and red. all came with a tortoise shell pickguard that covered half the guitar body.

following the original, they released it with three? new colour options, grey, yellow and orange. these new colours came with a pearloid pickguard, still keeping the same design as the original. 2002 also saw it with a smaller pickguard....and now were making USA versions. black dove single coil and HH pickups, and added a new bridge (tune-o-matic)

after that, they got rid of the pickguard, coloured the headstock to match the guitar and put racing stripes on the face of the guitar (like an L shape) calling it a GT.

sort of a brief explanation on the history of this guitar because all that happens between 1998 and 2006.

my toronado was about $600 - $700CAD NEW in 1998. if i were to find one now, which would be very hard, i would still pay the same.

the american made model is the only one that would draw more money. the other versions were mexican and korean (also heard of japanese)... i would pay up to $700 for these, no more. $550 - $650 would be fair. imo

The recommended retail on my GT Toronado (Racing stripes, Seymour Duncan pickups) was as much as a std US Strat. But I got mine at two thirds that price as the store was flogging them off.. not big sellers I guess, as they look a bit.. naff.. really..

Actually it's a great guitar. Plays and sounds much better than it looks. Quality is very high for a Korean build.

2nd hand prices - more for the US model no doubt. Then the Mexican Toronado, and finally the GT being cheapest of all I'd guess.

Hi CrazyGuitar,

Sorry to revive this post, but in case you are still interested in a new, black Toronado, well I know where you can find it...

A Fender-Gibson dealer in Central World, a big, upscale mall in Bangkok, has had one on display for at least one year.
It's the one that Brian Molko, from Placebo, is using in their video for "Battle for the Sun":
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TZhvHP4JMqs

It's got a short pickguard.
It's a mexican one with atomic humbuckers. Brand new.
I think it goes for about 26000 THB (650 EUR).
It looks great!! The only reason I tell everyone this offset secret and don't buy it for myself is because I already have a Toronado (A 2002, butterscotch blonde american special - see post) and I'm happy with it.

So, if anyone wants this brand new, black Toronado, you can either come to Bangkok today, cross barbwires, avoid getting hit by the thai army's live fire and finally make your way into the shut down Central World mall... or you can just wait a while until the malls reopen.

The shop is very nice. Lots of great Fenders (also some Squiers such as a duosonic, jagmaster and telecaster custom II with P90) and Gibsons/epiphones.
I don't work there. I just love that shop.

I hope this was useful.

Cheers.

erratum: not the same as Brian Molko. Molko's has a large pickguard and an early Toronado bridge (Good shot of it at 4.11 on the youtube vid).
The one in Bangkok looks pretty much like my 2002 US model (short pickguard) except it's black and MIM.

Cheers.

CentralWorld is closed for the moment. The Redshirts tried to burn it down on May 19, only succeeded in destroying Zen dept store. But they have to rehab the whole mall now. Should be open again in about four months. Maybe the Toronado will still be there then ;)
