The Fender Custom/Maverick was a guitar made in the late '60s out of old Electric XII parts. The Electric XII had been discontinued and Fender had to get rid of some overstock. Rather than liquidate, they put those guitars together. I'd like to get my hands on one, but they're rather rare.
Fender did the same thing around the same time with the Swinger, which they made from old Bass V bodies and Musicmaster parts. Here is one:

They look like raw azz to me.

Which is why their product life-cycle was so mercifully short!

As far as I know Rick Nielsen, Cheap Trick's guitar nut, has an original Fiesta Red Custom/Maverick with a matching headstock in his collection.

The Custom/Maverick is a 6-string Electric XII made up from various left-over parts. It also sports a Mustang vibrato bridge and a bound rosewood neck with pearloid shell blocks.

The Maverick was only supposed to have been available in Sunburst. If Rick Nielsen has an all original one in Fiesta Red it was a custom order and probably the only Fiesta Red one that exists.

I own one complete Fender Maverick and a second Maverick body. One of my bodies is refinished in Ice Blue Metallic. The other one still has it's original sunburst finish but was routed for humbuckers and had string ferrules added on the back. They were supposed to all have poly finishes but my original finish Maverick body is nitro. I bought my Maverick complete with the Ice Blue body about a year ago and bought the original burst body off of ebay about a month ago.

Here are some pics of it back when I had the Ice Blue body assembled and how it looks now with the Sunburst one.

Interesting, stuff, very custom. It's like Fender Jazz Bass, Vox Bass, Gibson Thunderbird bass, all rolled into one compact Mustang guitar. The headstock variations are very unusual.
