Hi. I recently had a Seymour Duncan JB pickup installed at the bridge position on my '65 Mustang reissue. I still have the stock neck pickup. I want to replace the volume and tone pots to CTS 500k audio taper pots. Do you think that the 500k pot will be too much for the neck pup to handle? I barley ever use it. I know that the Mustangs take solid shaft pots, but that's it. Will the pot in the following link fit in the Mustang? http://www.guitarelectronics.com/product/CPC500/CTS_500K_Audio_Taper_Precision_Tolerance_Guitar_Super_Pot.html.

Thanks for the help,
-Adam

one other question I forgot to ask. is it recommended to change the 250k tone pot to 500k if the volume pot is swapped w/ a 500k?

thanks again,

Adam,

The JB and the JB Jr were originally designed with 250K pots in mind for best performance. However, there's no, "in stone" rule which says you can't use higher resistance pots and this includes for your OEM neck pickup.

Chiefly, what to expect with 500K pots in your situation is that the JB will have an upper mids spike and the OEM pickup will lose tangible midrange while gaining enhanced (and possibly excessive) highs and lows.

Yes, you can mix and match pot values.

Between the volume and tone pot, the volume pot will have a more dramatic effect on the circuit's overall tonality. Be advised though that a 500K tone pot in your situation would have to be manipulated up or down more to achieve the same tonal results as you are used to getting with the 250K pot. It's kind of like going from a higher gear to lower gear.

The 500K, split shaft pot you've linked to will work. However, you will have a problem with the OEM knobs seating correctly as they are made specifically for solid shaft pots. So, unless you are also going to switch the OEM knobs to a pair which are made for split shaft pots, you'd be better off staying with outright solid shaft pots.

Personally, I'd leave well enough alone if I were you. Meaning, sticking with the OEM 250K pot combo. With 500K pots, even the one, your guitar will sound fizzy on the bridge pickup, clanky on the neck pickup and with these two tonalities on together, it will be a combination of the two with additional treble. To what extreme depends on whether you change one pot to 500K or both. As always, YMMV.
