Hey everyone. I just moved to Japan and bought a brand new Japanese Fender Jaguar. It's time to put new strings on it though, and I've heard that the Jaguar is meant to be played with 11 gauge strings.

Is this true? Right now, the factory strings are still on it, and I'm not sure what gauge they are. Do I have to do any adjustments of any kind before putting on 11's? I don't want to risk screwing up my guitar in anyway. My Japanese is awful (as of now) and it would be nightmare trying to get it fixed.

I'm sure this has been asked before, but I searched and couldn't find anything. Thanks for the help!

You can use any guage you like, however I do find 11s work quite well on shortscale guitars, Jags included.

I use Ernie Ball Beefy Slinky(.11-.52) on my Jaggie. Sounds great. But mine came strung with $@!&#* Fender OEM .10s.

Thanks guys, I've got Ernie Ball 11s too and plan on putting them on this week. I'm used to 10's so I'm excited for the change, hopefully it'll inspire something new.

.011 D'Addario roundwounds are good enough for this picker.

I don't use anything less than 10s (Ernie Ball Regular Slinky). I think it has to do with the bridge saddles. I'm going to replace mine w/ the mustang saddles.

My Jaguar is the American reissue, but I think the saddle issue might be the same.

I found that by putting a small shim under the neck, at the back of the neck pocket, closest to the neck pickup, thus making the neck angle somewhat like a Gibsons - the bridge can then be raised so that the angle of the strings over the bridge is greater. (whew - long sentence) This puts more pressure on the bridge from the strings, making them stay put better.

Doing that, - and after getting everything adjusted properly - I put some of my wifes clear fingernail polish on all the screw threads to act as an invisible "thread locking compound". That has kept the screws from backing off and changing the settings when playing.

That has allowed me to go back down to the 10 size that came on it from the factory - and they stay put - on the factory saddles. More comfortable to play too.

Some of this was done trying to find a cure for my Jaguars feedback problem. (I'm looking in a new direction now) I have had every size string from the factory 10s up to flatwound 13s on this guitar. It even played good with the 13s. The most comfortable IMHO has been the 10s. I have a stock of D'Aquisto strings that I'm using now. They have been great sounding strings - but I think they may be out of business now. When my stock is gone, I'll probably go with either Daddario jazz or Ernie Ball slinkys.

I hope this helps some. :?
