That depends on the condition of each guitar.

As an investment, I think the mustang would be worth a bit more.

As far as playing goes, do you prefer short scale and limitations of the mustang? The strat is a more versatile instrument, but that is no knock on the mustang.

I would personally go for the mustang, but I already own a few strats and love Fender's nontraditional instruments.

Mustangs are neat guitars. Just look at what Kurt Cobain, David Byrne, PJ Harvey, Thurston Moore, Buzz Osbourne, Norah Jones et al. have been able to do with them.

The Mustang was originally designed as a student's model guitar in '64. After the release of the Mustang, the Musicmaster and Duo-Sonic were redesigned using the Mustang body; These were branded the Musicmaster II and Duo-Sonic II but the decals were not consistently applied.

All three Mustang-bodied models (Mustang, Musicmaster II and Duo-Sonic II) were offered with optionally the 21 fret 22.5-inch (or 3/4 scale) neck, or a 22 fret 24-inch neck, but the 24-inch was overwhelmingly more popular and 3/4 scale examples are rare. 24 inches is still relatively short, the same as the Fender Jaguar but a full inch and a half shorter than the Stratocaster.

If it were me, I would keep the Stratocaster and not trade, but maybe you prefer the shorter scale?

As the owner of 3 Strats and a '65 Mustang I'd go for the swap, that is if the Mustang is in good shape. The Mustang is capable of creating some great sounds and I'd get it just for the funkiness of it.Adrian Belew of King Crimson relied on a(Highly modified)Mustang for years, the short scale allowed him to perform his jaw-dropping riffs. Also Fender made a Mustang- bodied Bronco, like the Musicmaster it was single pup but the pup was in the bridge position and the Musicmaster's pup was at the neck position.

I love my Mustang, but I don't have a Strat.

I don't know that I'd trade my Mustang for a Strat, I think I'd miss it too much.

Hello Cloud011085,

Well if they are both in equal condition,
value is about the same for the two guitars.
Globally the stratocaster is a more desired instrument.
Personally I would keep the Strat.
Post photos if you can. we all enjoy em.

Cheers.

I would go for the trade just as long as the Mustang is all original. It'd probably appreciate more in value over time. I love my 70's Mustang. Easy to play because of shorter scale, you can play hard without knocking the PU selector switch, unlike I do on my Strat every once in a while.

For the funky sounding pickups, try the out of phase switch and play some Johnny Winter.

Atolleter is right the Mustang sounds great in the out of phase position it's not as powerful as a Strat pickup wise but it still has that unique tone that you can only get from Fender single coils.

If I had to get rid of a guitar between my 70's Strat and my 70's Mustang I would of course lose the Mustang.

That's a very good point of course in a scenario like that I too would keep the Strat.

We need to know if he has another Strat so we can make an educated decision.
Surely he will miss the Strat if all he has left is the Mustang. The trade is good, if he can afford to get a replacement Strat...

Cloud? What did you end up with?

It totally up to you but the Mustang is alot more rare than the MIJ Strat. Play the Mustand and see if you like it, if you trade you can always get another Strat and have a nice 70s Mustang too.

As the owner of both, they are 2 very different guitars. The strat is a versatile, precision machine. The Mustang, though designed as a "student" guitar, has a completely different sound and feel, more raw.

Image Image

My Values:
91 Strat Plus: $800-1100
69 Mustang Comp: $1900-3200

Now if you are comparing just MIJ Strats to a 70's Mustang (USA)

Mustang: (ebay) $650-1500
Mustang Competitions: $2000+

MIJ Strats: $130-600

So, if both guitars are in equal condition and based on value only, then HELL YES.

But if you don't like the guitar, then what is the use?

very worth it. and 89 japanese strat for an american 70 mustang. Even if you didn't like the Mustang you could sell it and get a better Strat. Or hold on to the Mustang for another 5 or 6 years and get even more for it.
