Hey all..1st post...heres the deal.. I was given a 1976 starcaster as a gift in 1980. The original pickups had been replaced w/gibson humbuckers. I would like to get it as close to original as possible. How similar(or dis-similar) would 72 tele reissue neck pickups be to the original? Also the plastic mounting plates were butchered with extra holes. Any resource on finding specs/parts/repair shops on vintage guitars would be appreciated.
Also- why the heck would Fender reuse the Starcaster name?

Because they own it, no further trademark work needs to be done (or paid for) and they probably have no intention of ever building another hollow or semi-hollow guitar. FUrthermore, the original Starcaster was a dud, so there's no fine name to tarnish by recycling it as a budget line.

It may take a few years more, but I'm sure that at some point Fender will reissue the Starcaster as it has been gaining a lot of popularity lately. The vintage Starcaster market is insane, and Fender will evenually want to cash in. They are currently doing so with the Fender Blender, which has been hot on the vintage market since the Smashing Pumpkins used it on on Siamese Dream. It's only a matter of time.

As it is, Fender is currently cashing in on Kurt Cobain (not officially of course) with the Classic Player Jaguar HH (in sunburst). While not using Kurt's name or image, big Nirvana fans know the image and are snapping this guitar up like crazy.

The same will apply to Radiohead when they eventually rerelease the Starcaster, as it is extremely associated w/ Radiohead currently. They may not say it officially, but they will be cashing in on them, nontheless, b/c hardcore fans will know the image.
