those are the two choices?

maybe you meant to say "favorite musician who happens to play a jazzmaster?"

Those are only my two choices. You can choose whoever you want :D !

That being said, I'd be hard pressed to think of a more skilled guitarist than Nels Cline who is almost exclusively known for playing a Jazzmaster.

Very cool, didn't know that. I always thought the lead position on a JM was tinny enough for some country style playing.

Oh yeah. Not tinny, but punchy at times.

Nels Cline is a great one, can't forget J. Mascis, Nils Lofgren plays slide on a JM (which is GREAT for such), J.M. Hendrix did play one on occasion ("Fire" and a few live shows), but Tom Verlaine is the Jazzmaster Master.

Lofrgren is a nasty guitarist.

Tom Verlaine is an awesome musician but Richard Lloyd was the real guitarist of the band, and I'm pretty sure he played a strat.

RockLibrarian--It depends as far as the "real" guitarist debate. On "Adventure" Verlaine took all of the solos and was the mastermind of the band-yes, more of a texture player, where Lloyd was more of a "solo" player-After they reunited it was the Richard Lloyd show guitarwise, especially live-Lloyd is primarily a Strat player and, for that matter, so is Verlaine nowadays. Richard is criminally overlooked as one of the great rock players-his work with Matthew Sweet, Lloyd Cole and John Doe is pretty astounding at times.

I agree about Lloyd and Matthew Sweet. Matthew Sweet had more than Lloyd though, he also played with Robert Quine and Ivan Julian. The guy knew how to pick guitarists!

Amazing video of Sweet playing Girlfriend with Julian and John Hiatt.

My favorite Television album is definitely Marquee Moon though, and that's where Lloyd outshines Verlaine, at least on guitar. Songwriting wise it's a whole different story.

But when I started this thread I guess I picked Elvis Costello too, and by extension, that means you can't overlook Verlaine.

Bob Bogle and Don Wilson of The Ventures. They went Mosrite for a few years but came back to Jazzmasters.

Fifty-plus albums and 120 million records and R&R Hall of Fame are good enough credentials, here.
