From Sweetwater http://www.sweetwater.com/publications/reports/?action=day&sid=42&day=2 but not yet on Fender:

Fender is reissuing two classics from the mid-1960s in the form of the '66 Classic Jaguar and Jazzmaster Limited Editions. These replications of the originals boast vintage-correct control schemes and pickups, with classic touches such as block inlays and vintage-style floating tremolos. These limited-edition guitars won't last long!

Fender '66 Classic Jazzmaster and Jaguar Limited Edition Features:
Reissues of two classic axes
Vintage-appropriate controls
Block inlays
Vintage-style floating tremolos
Limited editions

I have a '66 Jazzmaster, that I brought in a pawnshop back in the early '80s. It had been re-painted, but I love it.

It really is, whoever painted it used pro paint, and was a pro painter. It looks better in person.

I found more info at Elderly Music http://elderly.com/fmic/items/FC66JM-3SB.htm, but it seem strange that this model has block inlays. My '66 Jazzmaster has dot inlays.

After some more research on Jim Shines' excellent Jazzmaster site http://jimshine.com/jazzmaster/intricacies_of_the_fender_jazzma.htm , I read that the neck on my JM may be a Strat neck left over from when Fender experimented with a Strat that featured a bound neck.

I think this explains the dot inlays instead of the block inlay.

I know the neck is from 1966, because I took off one time and it's stamped on the heel.

Ahh the back of the neck says Made in Japan...Looks like this is just an import of the Fender Japan JM66B and not really anything special :(

Although the first link you provided showed a Candy Apple Red Jazzmaster without the matching headstock (something the Japanese version does have) so maybe there's hope for this being something different?

The Japanese ones with block inlays are still totally awesome though. Gotta love it anytime they put those on a Fender. Though if it is just the Japanese import...beware! The pickups will be garbage. I'm a huge fan of Fender Japan but their JM pups are horrifying.

Also...I'm not sure but I think the real 1966 with the block inlays was a separate model from the regular jazzmaster - the JM-B maybe?

I know this is a really old post but lets clarify things... I was googling a few days back on this particular subject and the Jazzmasters and Jaguars were both going through a transitional period with the new ownership.

Your jazzmaster could very well be just an early production neck and the ones with B&B were later on... 1966 was a very experimental year (to say the least)

SO.... long sotry short. Both were made that year. Dots and B&B

3 quarters way down the page, read CHANGES - TIMELINE (may help)
