I have a competition orange mustang i've owned for 36 years i just pulled out of mothballs. other than some cosmetic fix up and restringing it should play just like it did 12 years ago (the last time it was ever played). After taking the strings off i decided to take the neck off and see when the guitar was produced. well, the numbers on the neck butt do not make much sense, stamped in green ink the numbers read as follows;
16 292 9 9R
and the serial number on the back plate reads as; 270267.
can anyone in fenderland please tell me when this guitar was produced or
tell me where else to look for a production date.
i don't want to sell it. i want to put it back in my arsenal of axes to play.
thanks in advance for any info you might be able to share

Yep, it works. Very nice condish, better than mine. Is the whammy bar original? Had to get another one for mine and I had to work on it to make it fit and usable.

Thank for the pix. There's still some affordable vintage out there, Mustang is one of them...

yes everything is original hardware on the piece. the whammy bar is installed very tight . not much free movement. i have to us e a good amount of force to pull up on the bar and the bar stays in place until i push it out of the way. i like it like that it just doesn't drop out of you hand , you actually have to move it out of the way. i guess the mounting screw holding it has never been loosened up.

Then I dont feel too bad, that's exactly how I have to work mine. Well there's no thread on those bars so you cant really loosen it.

I WD40ed all moving bridge parts and filed the whammy bar down where it makes contact with the screw, it's much better now but not loose like a Strat.

you are correct on the bar not being threaded. there is a set screw holding it place. I'm getting her back tonight after work.
I'm like a kid waiting to go on his first date. i'm so anxious to put my grubby little meat hooks back around her neck.....mmmmmmmm
