Why is it that evreyone owns teles, strats, and les pauls and most people don't own the jaguar, jazzmaster, or mustang. They are just as good as the others, but they don't get any credit.

Main factors to buying a guitar:
I want a guitar like the one used by my favorite guitarist
I want a guitar I can take home "today"
I want a guitar I can afford
I want a guitar that is a status symbol that will impress my musician friends.

What do I own? a tele, a strat, and a les paul. What can I say? I'm a conformist, lemming. 8)

Tele's are strats are really hard to argue with. Both are absolute icons for when people think the electric guitar.

But I can see where you're coming from. I guess I'm just not cool enough to own a jazzmaster 8)

I have a Mustang and an Iceman--when I got them I didn't know anybody who had either, and in jamming with many others never encountered another one of either guitar.

An Iceman or Mustang would show up in the hands of a well known guitarist every now & then.

The Mustangs were almost always modded.

Mine isn't--I love it as is.

Thanks--now if only I'd actually wiped off the smudges before I took the picture.

I bought my big 4 (Strat, Tele, Les Paul and SG) and a Gretsch hollow body before I focused my attention on the "other" Fenders. In my case, I had never played a Jazzmaster, Jaguar or a Mustang. That changed last year during a Guitar Center holiday sale. I played a Classic Player Jazzmaster Special, got a great deal on it and ended up taking it home.

It was more difficult finding a Mustang to try. They're a special order guitar in this area and most of the used ones I have seen were not in the best condition. Then one turned up at my favorite Guitar Center right after the holidays. Some kid had special ordered it, didn't like it and returned it. It was in excellent condition and other Fender GAS got me again.

Haven't played a Jaguar yet. That's probably a good thing. :)

Jaguars and Jazzmasters are a touch pricey, so I haven't gotten around to adding either to my collection. I'd likely end up with a Mustang in my collection before a Jaguar or Jazzmaster.

I once tried a Mustang through a Vibralux combo, at the Guitar Center in Indianapolis, and I dug the tones from it, once I figured out the cause of the feedback I was getting. I really dig playing surf instrumentals, and although a big part of the surf sound is "drippy" reverb, it seems that it is possible to (GASP!) have too much reverb. Backed off the reverb until the feedback stopped, and trying out the Mustang was a more pleasant experience.

Kurt Cobain played both the Jag and Mustang.

Elvis Costello played a Jazzmaster on his first album (it's on the cover)

Sonic Youth, J. Mascis played Jazzmasters.

I got my Classic Player Jaguar for 450 and my Jaguar HH recently for 299. Also just got (although it is "pricey" relative to the list it was more than 50% off list price) an AVRI 62 Jazzmaster.

All very nice.

I have the strats, teles, sg and les pauls too.

I rarely see them at a guitar shop. Maybe thats why. I opted for the Squier Jagmaster to curb my gassing for a Jaguar or Jazzmaster until I can afford to buy one.

Maybe it's because they had a chronic design flaw, which meant that the break angle over the bridge wasn't steep enough. As a result the strings would slip off the saddles, the bridge would rattle and the sustain is badly compromised. I don't know - maybe they've fixed them now? There are several products on the market to sort this well known problem anyway..

As for them never achieving iconic status, well that's often down to (bad) luck. Not played by the right player at the right time maybe.

The problem becomes self perpetuating - there are SO many strats and teles and LPs around, and in the media. What people can see is what they aspire to buy.

For me, the answer is more straight forward I'm afraid. The Tele, LP and Strat are definitive designs - anything else is a variation on a theme.
