Hey Fenderizers,
I came across a used Kaman GTX20 guitar on the cheap. It's basically a korean strat with 3 single coils, finish is multi-color under black crackle, bolt on 2 piece maple neck with a tilted headstock, ping machines.
Did a little checking online and turns out that Kaman/Applause/Ovation is/was owned by Fender.
I think this guitar was built in the 80s and it truly is a player. Plays as sweet and the tone is at least as good as my newer MIM. I've seen other GTX guitar models online and ebay, but not this one. Anyone else out there have any experience with these apparent Fender cousins?

Just Curious

Give a yell over at the Ovation Fan Club. They can surely answer any questions about your GTX.

FYI: Kaman made Ovations, Appluase, and Adamas guitars. They were bought by Fender and still are owned by them.

What a coincidence! I bought a GTX20 this summer too from the pawn shop where I lost my beautiful sunburst Mexi Strat about a year earlier. It was super cheap with a butt-ugly headstock and an unfortunate greenish blue color (quality finish though), but in great condition. I set it up & plugged it in and WOW! They only had it tagged for $59. I bought it with a combo amp for my bass (which was what I was actually shopping for) & they threw in the GTX20 for another $20, so it's hard to say how much I actually paid for it, but what a steal!

I say snap these things up if you see them, and if sound & playability are more important to you than looks.

I'm a bassist, & I just wanted a Strat-style axe to record with. One of the best bargains I've found lately, & at the time I wasn't even looking to buy a guitar.

Yea,
Someone else found one of these sleeper axes. I got mine and was just blown away by the tone. Much fuller and thicker sounding than my std MIM strat. Only issue was that the frets were pretty worn and although it played well there were some minor issues. Played it at a few jam sessions and one of my friends kept looking over at it. I was running it straight through my Deluxe Clone and the tone was off the charts. It's about to replace my beloved Agave Blue Tele as the #1 axe.

Recently, I picked up project Ibanez SV 470. Some guy had upgraded to one of those JEMs and sold me the body and neck for cheap. I had some extra pickups lying around and wanted to try to put together something interesting. I realized that the neck dimensions were the same except for the one offset screw, so I swapped it onto the GTX body with 3 screws and set it up nicely. WOW!!! To hell with the Ibanez project. That tone with the nice wizard style neck. This guitar is pure Evil....... I played it at a party this past Saturday and it just covers everything from Affirmation to ZZ top.. Great guitar!!!
