Quite probably it was something from Fender's Master series.
There were solid bodies & Hollow bodies as well.
Well Known arch top luthier James D'Aquisto designed a full hollowbody archtop for the series.

Check it out here-
http://guitarcollecting.co.uk/2009/05/20/collectable-guitars-pt-27-fender-robben-ford-model/

and here-
http://www.masterseriesguitars.com/

I wouldn't mind trying one of these out.

I'm sure that's what it was. I'd love to see Fender bring these back. The recent Squier version didn't do justice to the original. A few years ago, I saw one hanging in a guitar shop frequented by pro players. They wanted $4,000 for it . . . and they wouldn't let me play it. I guess I didn't look like I had $4 large on me. Anyway, here's Robben in action with his sig model.

Oh yes,
Robben Ford's Fender Elite!! Very sweet guitar. Very pricey and made with the finest materials... One of those Master's Series axes. Open your wallet extremely wide if you wish to purchase a used one......

I have the next best thing in a way. I picked up one of those Squier Esprit's. This was an affordable model based on the Master Series Robben Ford Guitar. Made in Korea, Oversized symmetrical Strat shaped Chambered Mahogany Body, Duncan Designed Humbuckers, with the Gibson style bridge and knob config. Guitar is off the hook. Plays like a Fender, but sounds more like one of those Epi Dots/ Gibson 335.

Best $250 I ever spent for a used guitar. If you can find them new, they go for about $400. Worht a test drive if you want something close to the real thing!! I call it my in between guitar. Not quite a Jazz box, but not a Strat either. Strat Clarity and Gibson Sustain.... Awesome axe for playign stuff like Santana, Blues or comping Jazz chords.

I almost took the plunge on the Squier a couple of times, but I read all of the reviews on MF and HC -- people either loved them or hated them, they had problems or they were near perfect, they sounded great or they sounded like crap. The initial review in Guitar Player was great, but it was based on the guitars Fender had available at the NAMM. I never knew what to believe. My local GC never got one so I never got to check one out. Anyway, I still check eBay, but prices now are north of the original $399 sell price !! Hold on to yours!

Yeah,
I had read the same reviews, but wanting a guitar like that kept me looking on Craigslist. Interesting, because folks always seem to 'hear' it first and then they turn around , do a double-take and ask.... 'What kind of guitar is that?'

The best part about the guitar is that is 'sounds' as well as looks like something different.

It's a nice guitar for working between the LP and Strat/Tele guys. Almost as thick but not as dark as an LP. Very articulate, but not nearly as bright as a strat. It's the guitar I bring to the jam session when I don't know what the other guirarist plays. Never lets me down. :D

I'd like to see Fender put out a good semi-or full hollwbody. Maybe reissue the Coronado, but make it playable this time. And Made in USA PLEASE!!
Don't get me started on how they ran Guild into the ground.
Elites were nice instruments. The 'real' Starcaster played nice but was double-butt ugly.

Double butt ugly?
I love the look of the Starcasters--it was different and very comfortable to play.

...actually I may have been a little overzealous about the Starcaster. The dark sunburst and especially the black ones were tasty indeed--It was the natural finish one that made me run for cover. Then again I have never lied natural-finish guitars-one of the bad things about the 70s. I would not mind seeing the Real Starcaster reissued. Again, USA-Made please.

Agreed! I never understood the attraction to natural finishes either.

Back on topic . . . sort of . . .
The original Master Series guitars were manufactured in Japan, but I'm sure Fender could turn out a US-made model in the Guild factory. And maybe bring back the Bluesbird, too. I think Fender is making only acoustics under the Guild brand.
