I feel like the last guitar they made was the Cyclone. Are there any plans for a new guitar?

I believe they'd bring back a currently out of production model before they'd "waste" anything on a brand new, never been produced before design. Even then, they'd likely conduct some sort of poll/survey as to which model would be the best choice to bring back into production.

In all honestly I kind of hope they don't.

Personally I couldn't hack the change. I think most people are satisfied with fender's signature strat/tele combo, and they'll simply continue to upgrade them year after year.

Besides, trying to top the looks of a nice mustang, etc will simply lead to failure.

I'd like to see the Lead series brought back.

Also, I'd like to see Fender bring back the Esprit or similar Master Series guitars. The original was discontinued when CBS sold the company to Fender's management. The recent Squier version was plagued with production and quality problems, and some people wouldn't buy it simply because it said "Squier" on the headstock.

As for offering new models, many guitar companies owe their existance to the Fender and Gibson designs they copy.

Yeh bringing back the performer would be interesting. Change the headstock to a more recent fender headstock though..

The new Marauder is a pretty original design.

Interesting query.

What characteristics would differentiate the "new" Fender?

Body shape, pickup configuration and specs, electronics, scale length, wood?

What would it DO to make it desirable?

What player demographics and musical styles would it be aimed at?

What potential market awaits it?

What qualities would it have which would insure its staying power?

Probably not necessary -- the Stratocaster is the perfect guitar.

All of JSJH's questions above are relevant, especially the ones regarding the market and customers. There are some products I'd like Fender to reissue but without a large enough market, it's just not worth it to them.

Speaking of reissues, I think I'll post another "Why don't they bring back the . . ." question/rant.

Additional ponderings (while shoveling snow) on the "Completely New Fender Guitar"

In the heydays of each musical instrument, its form was largely refined to a form of functional "perfection." To all practical intents, acoustic violins of today are barely more than copies of Stradivari and Guarneri del Jesu instruments of 350 years ago.

Much the same can be said, respective to their developmental eras, of the valve trumpet, clarinet, flute, saxaphone and modern drum kits, even to an extent, the acoustic piano.

The electric guitar went through an unusually rapid gestation, from about 1950 through 1965, with the ES-175, Telecaster, Les Paul, Stratocaster, Jazzmaster, ES-335, Gretsch 6120, Jaguar, Firebird, Rickenbacker 360, SG, Fender VI and Mosrite Mk I, "pretty much defining" (with minor significant variation) the electric guitar.

Even "groundbreakers" like Line 6's Variax and Taylor's T5 are scarcely more than a synth in the shape of a guitar and a semi-hollow with both piezo and magnetic pickups. Radicals like The Chapman Stick never caught on, commercially.

The "completely new, original (Fender) model may be a darn long stretch, requiring a metaphorical quantum leap by another now-unknown genius like Leo....

I agree with the above except for the "Probably" part.

again fender has some of the best selling guitars the strat and tele so there really is just no need. I mean gibson has a lot more guitar models and versions of guitar then fender but both are just as successful. Fender should just keep it simple, put the resources they would use into making a guitar that, lets face it wouldnt sell, into improving the products they have.

Back in 1996, Steely Dan's Walter Becker (a guitar collector, himself) wrote a short article for Guitar Player mag where he is credited with coining the term G.A.S. In it he offered six ideas for fighting Guitar Acquisition Syndrone.

4. Pretend you are a clarinet player - how many clarinets do you own?

On the other hand, how many ways can you change a clarinet to provoke gear lust?

As true a statement if there ever was one!
