hi all,

kind of a hardware tech question.

i recently got a costell jazzmaster and i love the sound and everthing, but my problem is the bridge, at least the top (low E top) side of the bridge sinks when i play the guitar hard for a little while.

seems to be sinking into the body, don't know why this is happening, but it sucks because the action goes down, the strings hum against the frets, and then the guitar is also out of tune.

thanks for anyone's insight.

Just thought this might help if you haven't set it up yet.

You may not have enough spring tension. The strings AND spring need to balance their pull on each other. I have a Strat and had to get quite a bit of tension on the tremolo before it was stable and came back to pitch after pushing the whammy bar. I have a Jazzmaster too and it's been good.

Set the tremolo spring, tune up and play, do some tremolo bends and re-tune and tremolo again, tune a few times, this get things BALANCED. You'll have to do this each time you play......nature of the beast ! Also, when you tune so that your springs are pulling "straight", tune the low E then the high e Then the A then the b and so on back and forth. Make sure you are doing the stings right on the posts (locking) AND LUBE THE STRINGS IN THE NUT..... this is BIG !!!

I have had this problem as well. The setup of the bridge is rather delicate and finicky it seems. I've been doing some research on the subject. If you can get a hold of Dan Erlewine's book "How to Make Your Electric Guitar Play Great", he goes into this bridge a bit. He describes a technique for stabilizing the bridge using a couple of strat saddle height screws inserted inside the bridge posts to lock in the adjustment. I am going to try that as it's not too tough to do and doesn't require any modding of the guitar.
