Well, I would say for you to get an acoustic guitar. It will let you learn the basics and you will build up strength in you hand. That will make it easier if you keep playing and you switch to an electric later on.

I always had tunning issues with the squire i started with, but the starcasters pickups are crap. i would chose an acoustic guitar first in stead of an electric though, it'll build your left hand strength and make you a less "brutal" player if and when you switch to an electric

I just got my Starcaster last week and love it. I haven't had any of the issues I've read so frequently about. Has a clean sound.

I changed the strings as soon as I unboxed it though.

I'm not saying go for the Starcaster.. just that I've had a good experience with it so far :)

I know it's not one of your choices but log on to sweetwater.com and look at the Gibson SG.

8) I would definitely start with an acoustic to get your foundation built. then shop for an electric.

I would start with the Affinity. It's not a toy like the starcaster. I picked one up and have not been disappointed. I also agree with the other poster who mentioned that an Acoustic guitar might be good to start with.

yeah get a used MIM; if you don't know what a MIM is, its a made-in-mexico standard. they are high-quality guitars and you could get a used one for about the same price as one of those starter packs

Like darwintheband was insisting,Its really better for you to start on acoustic guitars as I myself also trained there.electric guitars sound different and has fancy effects taht affects tone, you can't really appreciate playing it much if you're beginner except only if you're reason of playing is the heavy metal music.

Also, make sure that you really do want to play guitar if you're buying a starter pack(I know many people that bought their packs and their spend their lives hiding on cases.

Squier package is the best bang out of your buck out there.considerign quality, sound and playability.

I could also suggest the Epiphone Special II pack as a starter. It has decent pickups, the les paul feel but the tuners suck a bit.

good luck on your purchase

IMO the new starcasters are crap if you can find an older starcaster they are better, but I would say out of the two go with the Squier.
