I'm trying to finish my Frankenstein Replica and I'm wondering what tape was used in the spring cavity and on the front to hold the picks on the Fender Replica. It's almost like a linen duct tape without a coating. Does anyone know what Chip Ellis used? I've searched high and low for the same exact tape and I'm not finding what I need.
I have white duct tape on it now, but it's just not right.

AWESOME recreation man, great job.

i seem to remember reading somewhere that its just masking tape.

i have fenders original site that gave a 3d preview of their build, but its not working anymore.

i really do want to say its masking tape though.

good luck with it.

Thanks jag_man!
I've already ruled out masking tape. The tape on the Fender was a cotton fabric tape like athletic or medical tape. I've got a med supply sending me some samples so I'm sure I can match it.

Hello Divebombinc,

Great job on that guitar,
I'd be proud to have that baby in my stable.
Looks like you went for a quite excellent neck on it.
I wouldn't sweat the tape thing but the devils in the details.

Cheers.

Thanks! I can't help but sweat the small stuff. I even spent several days tracking down the wire used on the Fender between the volume and the jack.

It's just how I am. If I'm going to do something I'm going all the way. "All the way!" It's an Airborne thing that I can't shake.

great job bro,not really sure about the tape but it could be just two sided tape found at any hardware store.

Wow,,that is F***ing sweet.
Have you taken a look at Gorilla tape?
it may be close, it's like black medical linen tape.

i love that Frankenstein, a total work of love! Congratulations!
When I was a kid I remember looking a big page sized picture of the original in a guitar player magazine of some sort, and one of the things that struck me as strange was the quarter on the bridge!

hey thats a really nice replica....im almost positive i heard it was just masking tape, it was in an interview somewhere i think....if u dont mind me asking how much did it cost to make and how long did it take u...just wondering since the actual fender one is about $25,000 (which sounds like a rip off to me)
