Kurt never liked it,he played it for like 2 shows,he didn't like that it didn't have a back contur, and the mustang bridge,so he sent it back to them, they were made un japan from like 1996-1997 ,they actually made lefty jagstangs, then they made them in 2003-2004,but stoped

:D Beautiful guitar! It looks like it's in perfect condition!

I just bought one in Fiesta Red but it didn't come with strings.

I'm trying to research the best strings for this guitar but haven't had much luck.
I've read that a heavier gauge string helps stop low e buzzing.

:?: What strings do you use on your jagstang?

I've owned three over the years, my sonic blue one is the only one i have now.
Its a great guitar but i think there are issues with consistency. As in there are good models and bad models. Shame really.
The guitar is suited to high gain sounds and is naturally bassy. I use gauge 10 with no problem.
The current value of the Jag-Stang has gone crazy, they are not worth the ridiculous ammounts people are asking for them. If you are looking for humbucker sounds on a Fender imo the Toronado delivers everything the other models failed on.
If you can get a JS in good condition for under $600 it is worth it.

Is yrs a reissue or an earlier model? I've got a reissue and I think its of better quality than the original run, at least compared to the ones I've ran into and played. Of course, as you said, they are very inconsistant. Maybe I just got a good reissue and played bad originals....

I have had one original and two reissues. The original was very problematic, but in all fairness i knew less about guitar set up back in 97'.

I have a 1996 Jag-stang. It has the Fender 50th Anniversary sticker on the back of the headstock. I got it off of Ebay.

Regarding strings, is there a big difference between brands?
Is it worth buying Fender strings?
Which type does everyone else use for this guitar: nickel wound, nickelplated steel, or stainless steel?

I don't useally fret ( ) over choice of strings, I'm just really excited about this guitar and want it to sound perfect when my husband finally gets to play it!!!

Strings can have a big effect on your tone. Pure nickel wound has the lowest amount of magnetic attraction that the other types, therefore you get less output using them. The upside is that they won't wear down yr frets as the nickel is weaker that the fret material, which also means you will have to replace strings often as they lose tone quicker. When you use nickel-plated steel, you get a higher output b/c the steel has a stronger attraction to the pickups, hence higher output. They also last longer that pure nickel wound, but if you don't replace yr strings when you should, you risk fret wear as the nickel plating rubbs off. Then you have yr stainless strings. Highest output, longest life, but guarenteed fret wear.

Fender brand strings are fine. I use bullet ends on my Strat as they have a much better tone transfer inside the bridge block as they are shaped to fit perfectly, even if you don't use the trem it means just a bit more sustain. I havn't tried a bullet end in my Jag-Stang yet to see how well it would fit, but I don't see it making a big difference as the string wraps under the tube.

I used bullets for a while and they sounded fine, but because the string doesn't wrap back around itself like a spool end string does, they tend to break alot. Too much for an aggressive player like myself. Another thing to note when you are using a short scale guitar, you'll probabally want to use at least .10 gauge strings since shorter scale means less string tension. Any of those super light strings tend to flap all over the place.

I've had one for a little over a year now and have enjoyed it. I assume most individuals asking about this guitar are already familiar with Kurt's quest for his dream guitar (he liked features on both guitars, mostly mirroring the mustang except for the body contouring on the hind end) Most people argue that Kurt was ultimately unsatisfied with the guitar and rarely used it, although reading the excerpts from his guitar tech at kurtsequipment.com seem to indicate that he liked it, but not as much as the regular mustang. My only complaint lies with the tremelo bridge, which is a pain when using alternative tunings and for staying in tune at all (which is too be expected, but is much worse than the trem on my strat). The pickups have an on/off/phase, which adds tonal diversity to the guitar, but also a somewhat brittle sound in the phase mode. Also check out Jag-stang.com for more info.

Can't really help w/ the alternate tunings part, as that means setting up your intonation every time you tune, but here's a thread from jag-stang.com that will show you how to set up your trem to stay in tune through the worst abuse:

I love jagstangs. I think one would look amazing in a super bright orange like candy tangerine, and I think a jagstang bass would look really cool if they'd do it right. 8)

You dont need to reset your intonation when using different tunings. Only when changing string gauges and it would have to be more than one size jump
