Plus why do they make cheap stuff....if you're not supposed to buy it :)

that's flawed logic. obviously it's made so you can buy it, but that doesn't mean you have to. a bad guitar can impair your progress.
you can do whatever you want, but i would suggest skipping the starcaster. especially since you have already been playing for 9 months and i'm assuming you're gonna keep playing for a while. if you want to play guitar, don't buy a toy. that is all the starcaster is.

Talk about flawed logic. I have been playing for 25 years, mostly acustic, I have a Starcaster electric and I just bought my daughter one for her first guitar. I LOVE the Starcaster and it is NOT a toy. Fender makes different levels of guitars...Beginners, mid-range and experienced. You can tell which guitar is which by the price tag usually. The Starcaster is obviously a beginner guitar and it's cost is relative, but it plays great if you have it set up properly. Fender is not going to sell you a "Toy" for your first guitar...that would just be bad business if they would want you to buy another guitar from them in the future. If you want a great "First" guitar, buy the starcaster...or better yet, try a Starcaster and then try another like the Squier (Approximately $100-$150 more depending on the amp that comes with the package and if it is an HSS setup) I bet that you wont find much difference in the two (If any).

REMEMBER: A good guitarist can make any guitar sound good....and a bad guitarist will make the best guitar sound bad.
