the general rule is, don't settle for something because it's cheap.

Thats a good one to start with if your on a tight budget. Obviously, there is a difference between a guitar you pay 100 bucks for and one that costs 500 or 1000 bucks. Squire guitars aren't so bad. They've gotten a lot better over the past ten years. I've got my eye on a squire tele. I'm thinking about going with the squire just because it costs significantly less than a fender version that looks almost identical. I played both at the store just to try them out and I thought the squire was good enough for the price.

of course squire also has the 60's oversized headstock which IMO is the nicest one

that's flawed logic. obviously it's made so you can buy it, but that doesn't mean you have to. a bad guitar can impair your progress.
you can do whatever you want, but i would suggest skipping the starcaster. especially since you have already been playing for 9 months and i'm assuming you're gonna keep playing for a while. if you want to play guitar, don't buy a toy. that is all the starcaster is.

I love Squiers, I have 2. They're great.... for the price.
Anyhoo, shouldn't this thread be in the Squier Section?
