My jazz teacher lets me use his old Coronado II when I go for a lesson (This way I don't have to shlep a guitar up the steps to his place). I think it plays great. I put a search on in eBay, but I haven't gotten one yet. Any opinions on them? I understand they were designed by a German luthier, the DeArmond pickups don't deliver a typical Fender sound, and sometimes the neck needs a shim, but once it's set up, it's nice.
What do you think? How hard are they to come by? What's a reasonable price? Is the Wildwood model any better? Are there tailpieces to look for? to avoid?
What?
Rudy

Hi Rudy,

I wouldn't say they're rare, just uncommon. Most normal prices range from $700 ~ $1200, with the custom colors at the high end.

The main differences in models are number & type of pickups, bridges & tailpieces. Everything else is just cosmetic changes.

What does you teacher have?

I had always wanted a Coronado, and I finally found a great deal on ebay and snagged it a few months back. I am a hardcore Fender freak, and I love the more obscure guitars they've made over the years. Mine is a '65 and it's a 2 pickup model. It is extremely light, and it plays like a dream. I put a Gretsch Tennessee Rose bridge on it because it came with a non-original bridge that didn't have adequate spacing. I did have to shim the neck to get it like I wanted, but after that I was very happy. The pickups aren't quite as lively as I would like, (they're like P-90's with 75% output), but I do like the sound I get out of them. I play original indie rock / alt country stuff, and I am more than pleased with it. I got mine for a little under $800 shipped and that's about as inexpensive as I have seen...and I researched them regularly for 2 years. It is not my "go-to-axe", and probably never will be, but to have a Fender hollow-body is just cool...right? It is to me. As far as the Wildwoods are concerned, I've never really heard anyone say if the process they used to tint the trees etc. had any bearing on the sound of the guitar or not. I do think they're really cool...definitely a standout guitar. I don't think you'll be disappointed if you get one at a good price. Comparatively speaking, it is not a 335 as far as build quality is concerned, but it definitely scores high on the "coolness meter"!

Hey Ballews,
Which one did you get? How did you date it to '65? Got any pics?
Checkerboard binding?
The Wildwood finish is just a very thin veneer. I got one of a group of about ten or so a couple years ago. These were NOS, without any clearcoat. Originally, I had it setup as a bass but then found a WW neck and am now using it as a six stringer.

I never dated it, I was told by the guy I got it from, who claimed he was the second owner, that it was originally purchased in '65...I have read they weren't produced until '66, but I have not really done extensive research....it's a Coronado II and it has a sunburst finish....it has the checkerboard binding...lots of crazing...the binding has stress cracks in many places and has shrunk a good deal...I don't have any pics, but if any of you guys would like to see it, I would be happy to throw some up.

As far as the Wildwoods are concerned, I was under the impression that trees were injected with stain (or something to that extent) before they were cut and made into guitars...either way, I love them.

You are right BallewMusic,
It was a Swedish process of injecting colors in the tree itself with an erratic output. Then the Swidish Adm. stopped it and it was over .
There were 3 hues: Brownish (I) Greenish (2) and a third one which I don't remember.
They are very fine, underrated guitars.
They deliver a great sound thanks to the DeArmond Pick Ups.
Let me find a picture of mine...
