I had a starcaster for a long time. It is a really decent guitar, that is wonderful to learn on.

You're telling him to buy the guitar you're telling him not to buy?

I'd personally go with a Squier Standard Series. If the Starcaster is anything like the SE package, which I believe it is-minus a rosewood fretboard, it's okay, but not truly a strat. The neck is a bit shorter and the electronics leave much to the imagination. If the starcaster is anything like that, try it out first, see if you like it.

The amp, on the other hand, is freakin' sweet!

The SE pack is nice, but like I said, the guitar isn't really a true Strat, the Affinity pack is a bit more, but from what I understand, a better guitar.

If you can play either, do it, get a feel for which of the packs you're more comfortable with.

Is it just me, or is the finish on the Starcaster really impressive? I have a candy apple red version. I've been comparing the color to other Fender Strats in candy apple red. I may be crazy, but I think the Starcaster has a better finish to it. Maybe it's just because I keep mine shiny. I love the white pearl pickguard.

I've been thinking of replacing it with a Classic 60s Strat (candy apple red with the mint pick guard). I think the Starcaster is better looking.

Check out the pawn shops - a good but cheap used guitar is almost always better than a cheap new one. Plus a year later the one you bought used will still be worth about the same as you paid for it. Can't say that about the Sam's Club guitar or any of the other "starter packs".

I saw a candy apple red Starcaster at the pawn shop today. The color and finish did look good. Looked nice overall till I tried to play it - then I put it down real quick. Guess my fingertips are spoiled because I couldn't imagine playing a whole song on it. And the price was more than an Affinity model.
