Am I the biggest idiot ever for thinking of this? Basically, I was riding the bus home and was thinking, "what if Fender crossed my two favorite guitars?"

This is what I came up with:

Jazzmaster headstock with standard Jazzmaster "font"
Chunky Tele maple neck and fretboard
Jazzmaster body, but a little wider
Tele bridge and bridge pick up
Jazzmaster style Humbucker at neck (lol)
Telecaster tone and volume knobs
Tele pick up selector with Jazzmaster switch for in and out of phase (like the mustang)

Only if it ends up sounding like crap. :P Seriously, though, you're not the first to dream up alternate Fender combinations, and you probably won't be the last. One of the guitarists in one of my favorite current surf bands has something similar to what you've described. Check out these pictures of Coctail Preachers. The guitar I'm talking about is the surf green "Jazzcaster." Tip-offs, on this one, are the maple fingerboard, and the Strat trem and output jack. I happened to be at that particular gig (The Madeira from Indianapolis, and The Volcanos from Detroit also played), and I saw them again, this past August, in Columbus, Ohio at the Hot Rod Hula Hop IV, so I can attest, from personal experience, the bitchin' tones from Steve Martini's "Jazzcaster." If you want to hear for yourself, check out some YouTube footage of 'em playing at Indianapolis' Melody Inn (I missed that one, damnit). Here's "Hawaii 5-0" and "Bikini Drag".

I'm currently collecting parts toward building a Tele with P90 pickups, a Strat-style tremolo and a 5-way switch. Once I'm done with that, I'll likely build one similar, except having only a bridge P90 and a 3-way switch wired a la Esquire. At some point, I'll finally get around to collecting parts for, and building a 12-string Telecaster Deluxe. Of course I could just buy a Fender Stratocaster XII, or save up toward scoring a Fender Electric XII on eBay, but I doubt that either would be what I want, tone wise. In the coming future, I may undertake a few "Jagcaster" projects, with two being Tele based, and one Strat based. The Strat based will be the most involved, as I'm planning for a Strat body but with a Jag/Jazz tremolo, 3 Jag pickups (will have to be a custom set, to get a rw/rp middle) and one of Guitar Fetish's "Superstrat" Wiring Kits.

Nice idea. I've come up with alternative ideas for stuff (like the one pickup Esquire-like wired Jazzmaster). I like your idea.

If your idea was so idiotic, I don't think anybody else would have already done it. Check out this Malden Mozak guitar sold by Earthshaking Music.

i don't think a tele neck would fit a jazzy body, but a quick neck pocket trim or shim could fix that.

also, the neck pickup from a jazzmaster is not a humbucker i don't believe. it's called a 'wide range pickup,' and i don't think that would look good with a tele setup.

sorry to be negative, but i think you should maybe slim down your idea a bit.

GlobalCooling, it all sounds good to me... except the Telecaster tone and volume knobs! I like to see the numbers on the knobs or at least some indication of how far they are turned. Maybe chicken head knobs?!

I'd love a Stratocaster body with a Jazzmaster neck, Jazzmaster pickguard and a a Jazzmaster trem, lol. Basically a Jazzmaster w/ a Strat body, lol.

Imagine this one Image, my '66 Jazzmaster.

I found it in a pawnshop while on tour with bluesman Snapper Mitchum back in the '80s. It was already re-finished.

I used on all of the 'Born In The Ghetto' album http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000QR2H9O/ref=dm_sp_alb?ie=UTF8&qid=1232224553&sr=8-2.

I hope you're sitting down.... $275/w case! It's all original, except for paint refinish. But you have to see it in person, the dude that painted it did a great job. He must have painted cars for a living.

I recorded a surf song with it that was #1 on the Soundclick charts http://soundclick.com/share?songid=6818279.

Wha? A bluesman playing surf! Well I know this guy Image.

my dream fender is a maple tele neck blonde jazzmaster body tremolo arm behind the tele bridge and a lace sensor neck pickup with a tele cotrol plate.
