I'm not a Fender expert. But I'm guessing a lot of you will be!
I'm after another guitar and I've narrowed it down to the three above...
I want a guitar that sounds a little different to my other guitars (All hard-tail, by the way) and I want a guitar with a nice trem system and a sound I can use for just soft-rock, britpop etc, and also something to double track on more chimey music, (Big Johnny Marr fann, so that's probably whats attracting me most to the Jags and Jazz').
My other guitars are a Fender Ash Telecaster with some Seymour Duncan P-Ups, and a Rickenbacker 360 with standard factory P-Ups. A guitar that compliments them on a track would be ideal, and I'd like the guitar to be quite versatile... Tele's and Rick's aren't exactly known for their diversity. Using a Vox AC30 amplifier. At the moment I'm pretty well stuck in Twang or chime mode. :)

So I'd appreciate it if anyone could point me in the right direction...
(By the way, I'm in the UK, so the MIJ models are available officially through Fender)

Classic Player Jaguar Special (Sunburst)
Classic Player Jaguar Special HH (Sunburst)
Classic Player Jazzmaster Special (Sunburst)
Made in Japan '62 Jaguar (Vintage White)
Classic '65 Mustang (Olympic White)

Any pro's or con's of any of those guitars?
Any personal experiences with the guitars?

Thanks a lot!

The CP Jazzmaster is closer to a regular Jazzmaster sound than the CP Jaguar is to the regular Jaguar sound.

Man, I'm just going to say right out that if you want a Jaguar get the vintage reissue, those classic player series guitars don't even come close to the original. The bridge is all wrong and you won't get any of the real beautiful tone an actual Jaguar has to give. I will say Mustangs are great, but go for the Jaguar, it beats the Jazzmaster and the Mustang hands down.

I forgot to tell you that I own a VRI Jaguar and I can tell you it the most versatile of all the guitars you listed. It has two neck pickup modes as well as a bass cut/boost and a full-forced bridge pickup. The playability is wonderful and I still highly recommend the VRI over any classic player, those things are awful. I also own a Jag-stang which functions exactly like a Mustang electronics-wise and there aren't many options for tones, those that do exist are on/ and in phase/ or out of phase. The tones are cool yes, but limited. The Jaguar has 7 very distinct and beautiful tones to choose from and it's also a great candidate for modification if you ever head down that path. The electronics and switches may seem odd to some but I found them very intuitive and they aren't as complicated as many people like to make them out to be. I hope you go for the Jaguar, it'll keep amazing you every time you pick it up, I promise.

I voted for the Mustang--but if it were to get one of those--I'd go for one of the Jaguars. I already have the Mustang.

I think the Jazzmaster is a more versatile guitar than the Jaguar or Mustang. More tonal choices.

'Had an MIJ Jazzmaster since '96. 'Put American Vintage Jazzmaster pups on it two years ago and it is a magnificent guitar. Repeat, magnificent

Last week, 'after many years of pondering, 'bought a MIM Player Jaguar. What a honey of an instrument. Freaking superb guitar, right out of the box.

And Jazzmaster and Jaguars are SO different!

You want humbuckers, this picker says go get a Gibson Faded SG, put covers on the pups and replace the knobs with vintage style. Made it into a tres' hip and capable axe.

Personally, 'do not like Mustangs.

Hi D

I have a 2008 VA 62 Jaguar That is just awesome. I love Trem and have several. The jag has the sweetest feel but at a cost. Its a locking Trem that is a bit picky on setup and if you smoke a string,,,,,forget it ....train wreck....

Very Jazzy on the tone with good sustain but not so hot on attach. So if your looking for tele punch ........not. Also great 60's tone and surf feel however the "mute" puts too much tension on the strings thus detuning the instrument. It is the most comfortable guitar as far as body fit is concerned but the short scale neck takes getting use to. The shielding is good so not to much hum (60hz). Your 50hz right?

The bridge is designed to float with the action of the trem so when i restring i tune then push the bridge all the way back toward the tail and then pull up on the trem arm. This pulls the strings over the bridge and when you let go of the arm the bridge rocks toward the neck slightly. It is now floating and is great, until you bump in to it. Easily reset on stage using above procedure without too much trouble.

Intonation
You swear a lot then adjust your screws and reset (re-float) your bridge and then swear a lot and adjust your screws and reset your bridge and then swear a lot......................

All worth it in the end....

Just ask Elvis Costello

My only issue is that the window for saddle height adjustment sucks BIG time. Too high and the string buzzes on the end of the screw. Too low and the string hits the bridge plate at the back towards the tremolo side.

I have Japanese Strats and i love them but stay away from the Jag

Cant speak on the classic series stuff

again my axe is an American reissue made in the states that is built to the original spec complete with all of its bugs.

I'm currently trying to get a "tun-o-matic" bridge from a new jazzmaster as i here they just pop right in.

Hope this helps

Cheers K

K,
I got my new '62 RI Jag in November last year and couldn't keep the thing in tune whether I used the tremelo or not. Those threaded "bolt" bridge pieces were and still are horrible.
They tried to talk me out of getting it at my local guitar store, but I had one back in 1965 and remeber I loved it and wanted another.
My guitar guy finally had to put a new bridge on it. It DID need some hole filling, so a dowel was put in then drilled so it can be made back to original again if I ever decide to do that.
The tuning problem has gone away, I can attack the thing with all the fury an old man can muster and it just sings. It also allows the action to be set lower if that's good for you.
I have no pictures of it with the new bridge, but this is what it looked like the day it came home.

The phase swithching on the Mustang will give it some distinct tones, but not everyone is fond of them.

I'd go with the Jazzmaster.

I have never tried any of those guitars but I love the looks of the Mustang.
But then again you shouldn't choose a guitar based on how it looks

Because I have both a 69' mustang(R) and a Jaguar(HH). I would take the Jag without hesitation and never look back. Neck feels better, tremolo works better and stay in tune, sound is awesome and really, the overall look and shape is better!

Also, on the special HH (Jag) you can split humbuckers and use them as single coils if you prefer the more classic sound of a jag. When pushed hard, these pick up also roar baby!

JAGUAR FTW!!!!
