I want to buy a Jaguar but am finding it impossible to be able to play both the Classic Player Special and the American ’62 Reissue in the same store.

Both stores will order the one they don’t have if I give them a “refundable” deposit – which means I need to spend the deposit on something. Is this really going to require driving 100 miles to a store that happens to have both?

It seems easy to find either one in a store with the HH setup but I’m interested in the single pickup version.

There are differences in the necks and pickups, so they should sound different and certainly feel different. I can feel the neck difference between my Strat’s and Classic ‘60s Custom Telecaster, so that’s a start, but the sound is what I’m most concerned about.

Does anyone with more experience than me have suggestions on how to go about “comparing” these when it’s 15 miles separating the stores that have them? Keep in mind that I’m not an accomplished player, but have recently begun to try to capture my abilities of MANY years ago.

Well, after playing this AV Jag, there was no doubt in my mind.
Had to have it

How do you like the shorter scale of the neck?

I actually love the shorter neck. My hand is in a more comfortable position and I don’t have to have the neck as straight up in the air. The neck feels wonderful, too. I was thinking that I’d need to change the back finish to satin, as I have done on most of my Strats, but I think I can leave it original.

With the pleasant results I’ve gotten from the AV Jag, I think I will be adding a ‘65 Mustang ReIssue in the near future, though the Mustang seems to be one that nobody likes to stock, so it may be a while before I have the opportunity to try one.

The more I use different guitars it surprises me how a difference of as small as few 100th of an inch can make a neck feel totally different. I have started keeping a database of all my guitars neck measurements at various places to try and find out why they all feel so very different and more importantly why I like part of one neck more than the same part on another. Maybe I can use this info if I ever decide to try a Master Built Model?

While the Jag was getting setup, I messed around with a ¾ size Squier Jag and it was really fun…very easy to play as well…just made cheaply but for $100 it might be fun to just have one around.

The American Jag does have a different neck than the Special and has a very different sound as well. I was looking to recapture what I remember hearing in the early 60’s and the Special just didn’t have it. I judged them by using the bridge pickup with a reverb setting of a little more than four through a Hot Rod Deville 212. I would have liked saving some money by getting the Special but the AV was just that much better.

I own a vintage reissue Jaguar and it's the only Jaguar aside from the original that I can swear by. The Classic Player Series Jaguars make me want to vomit and the Special HH is an abomination. I love my Jaguar because it has the exact same tonality and beauty of an original vintage Jag, there's no other models out there which even come close, especially if you want that 60's sound. The AV delivers while the others sit by and stare off. I highly recommend the Vintage Reissue as both a player and a Jaguar enthusiast. I hope you can find one you like, happy hunting.

OOPS, I hadn't realized you already bought one! That, I have to say is one beautiful Jaguar! Congratulations on a great guitar! Mine is the sunburst model, has it lived up to all of your expectations? I run mine through a fender vintage reissue '65 Super Reverb 4x10 and it's beautiful, I wanted a Super Six, but everyone that has one is selfish, haha. Oh man, awesome guitar!

When you bought your Av Jag, did you get a COA?
