has anyone ever heard of having acid hands. it means like when you play you wear your strings out very quickly. mine usually last a week and a half and its to expensive to change them that often so if you have any advice for how to deal with it then let me know

More of a medical question really. All an acid is is a high concentration of H+ Ions. Human skin is buffered to a pH of between 4.5 and 6. On the scale, the lower the pH number, the more acidic. If you are on the low end of this, then your hands will be around the same pH as a bottle of vinegar. Put some strings in that and see what happens!

Probably more important is your proximity to the coast. If you live on the seaside then your guitar takes an absolute battering chemically. All that salt water is very bad. Strings will corrode and your pots will need to be cleaned or replaced more often.

Also if your hands are wet, if you sweat a lot then your strings will corrode more quickly even though technically sweat would be less acidic. Its the salt here thats the problem.

Realistically though strings regardless of how you look after them will last less than a month with solid playing. Most performers change strings just before every performance. There are notable exceptions to this, of course.

Hey Pgkinder91,

I know exactly what you're talking about. I never found anything that could change what I believe is the imbalance in the pH level of my perspiration but when I switched to stainless steel strings (like DR for example) I noticed that they (the strings) would last quite a bit longer.

Hope this helps.

Well you could try some heavier string gauges and see if that works.

Oddly enough, I thought of another solution. Try drinking more water. We are pretty well buffered, but there is a chance that your sweat will contain less ions if you are well hydrated.
