Hi, I'm planning on restoring my Dad's Original Fender Mustang for him as a suprise for Christmas. It was repainted before he bought it when he was a teenager. I'm pretty sure the original color was eaither Sonic Blue or Daphne Blue because the new paint job has chipped away. But anyways It's pretty beat up and the volume and tone knobs seem to be intact but i'm not sure and the switches that let you choose between pickups definately don't work. So I need some advice on how to go about remodling it to it's former glory. Does anyone know where I can find out how this model was supoosed to be originally? and does anyone know how i can find the problems with the wiring? I want this to be my dads best christmas ever! So any advice would be amazing! Thank You!

http://www.marcelroy.com/ Nice site about Duosonics and Musicmasters. Relevant to what you;re doing. Good resource.

BAsically, start with a google search of "Fender Mustang" Go from there.

As for the electronics, check that all wires are secure. If both pups aren't working, could be as simple as loose wire off jack. If plugged in, can you hear anything if you tap the pups? Check support section here and see if there is a wiring diagram. I feel certain the web will have one somewhere.

Color of pickguard and pups might give you clue about original color. Disassembly might tell you even more. While you have it dismatled, go ahead and take a ton of documentation phots and whatever you do, don;t obliterate or paint over anything original. Restoration means proper type wires, pots, etc. Not just remove and replace with something modern that works.

A month between now and Christmas is a very short period of time to do a proper restoration. Proper refinishing might take that long. How much work are you doing yourself? Check reranch.com for proper refinishing supplies and advice.

Leave the neck alone if it is original.

The body, if badly beaten, could be replaced with another body. Ebay? Or could be filled and sanded and refinned to brand new appearance. Or a compromise of fixing the worst and letting it be an "under the bed" relic. A guitar that has been played and used and has some dings, but is basically sound and still looks nice.

Other more specific online forums might give you more and quicker replies than here. I've asked questions months ago that are still unanswered. PM me for other resources.

Good luck with your project. I know I would love it if my kids had my musicmaster restored for me.
