I'm about one week away from ordering a Custom Shop strat based on 59/60 transition year with a whole bunch of great specifications (including AA 1-piece maple neck with light tint) That's not why i'm posting though.

A knowledgeable guitar tech/salesman that I am ordering the guitar from says that he orders all of his Custom Shop strats without the "base undercoat" unless customers ask for it. and otherwise finished in Nitro Lacquer. I'm going to follow his advice and order my custom strat finished in Nitro without the base undercoat. To the best of my understanding, that's truly a "Thin skin finish". I know the lacquer will check eventually and sink into the grain with this finish but acoustically and cosmetically, it's going to age nicely. It's tone vs finish stability. I'm opting for the tonal advantage to leaving out the base undercoat. Have any of you dealt with this before and any thoughts, suggestions advice. My Strat will cost me $2650.00 and take 9-10 months before I see it. Thoughts are appreciated.
