Hello everyone. Ok - so, my strat is at the shop for the usual yearly setup and adjustments. Up until now I've always had another, or even few other guitars to use while my main strat is away. Due to older age now and not performing as much (not to mention the current crappy economy) my collection has come to just the one strat. So while it is away, and my wanting to still play, I grab the Squier Strat Mini that has been in the family and been through a few kiddies now. I tune this little guy up and it was like wow!! Could this be happening??!! It was soooo easy to play and felt very natural to me. Mind you, I don't have small hands and they are on the average side, but this 22.75" scale guitar just felt like it belonged in my hands. So now I'm getting worried as this could be just what I was looking for all these years of playing.

So this leads me to this thread. While I'm really loving the way the Squier Mini played, I couldn't help but keep thinking that this is a very low end guitar. Could these little things be upgraded enough to be considered a main instrument? I mean, I guess that the tuners, pickups (although I was surprised how well these sounded), saddles, nut, etc. can all be replaced but are the main woods good enough to do so? I believe the body is alder, but is it a low end of alder or is wood, well . . . just wood?

Now, in my new interest of short scale guitars, did some looking around and I found a used MIM Fender Duo-Sonic (22.5" scale) for sale at a (not so) local music shop for $199 with case. Looked to be in pretty decent shape. Should I not plan on modding the Squier Mini and just go for the Duo-Sonic? Maybe mod the Squier Mini and get the Duo-Sonic to have two short scalers?

Lastly (and I apologize for writing so lengthy) I notice that some of the new Squiers (Vibe Duo-Sonic, and the new Jagmaster) are coming with 24" scales. Do these slightly longer scale guitars still feel like the 22.5"ers moreso than they would feel like a full scale 25.5"? Thanks for taking the time to read.
