The number on the neck plate is 56928. Does this help?

Not really.

As I said, you will have to disassemble it to look for Month/Year codes.

Plus you may check out:
http://jimshine.com/jazzmaster/intricac ... jazzma.htm
to see if the features can help you pin it down to a specific time period.

I've got a 93/94 Made in Japan Jazzmaster. I've recently replaced the pups with Seymour Duncan (SJM 2 - neck & SJM 3 - bridge) and it has improved the tone/ sound immeasurably. I'd like to buy an older Jazzmaster but can't justify the money involved...I'd rather buy a Classic Player and upgrade the pups.

Are you suggesting I pry off knobs? And unscrew screws? Keeping in mind I am an expert at two tools - chain saw and sledgehammer. I guess I'm sayin' I'm scared to do it. Thanks for the other site - I'll check it out.

You sound as skillful as I am. In that case I would leave it alone. No sense ending up with a bucket full of guitar parts. :D

That jimshine link I gave should have enough information to date your guitar. Just check out the subtle changes over the early years.

So I finally had some time and checked out the jimshine website. Since I am afraid to take the JM apart, I could only use superficial clues. With that in mind, in total, it is pre-64. Some clues put me at pre-62. The decal is throwing me off since according to the site my decal is pre-fall 1960 (no pat pend #s of any kind. Tailpiece screws fit flush and have pat pending vs. a #, also putting the JM in the earliest time frame. I'll keep checking it out.
