I've seen a few threads on Starcasters around here, but they all seem to be about the beginner line of guitars you find at Best Buy, Target, etc. I was wondering if anyone here actually owns or has at least played an authentic semi-hollow Fender Starcaster. I've been scouring eBay for ages now, but every time I find one it is either ridiculously expensive or in really bad condition. A shame, really, since it is the one vintage guitar that I would love to have.

Welcome to the forum!
I do like the look of the vintage Starcasters.
Unfortunatley, they weren't well recieved by the public when they came out so they werent made for very long.
They were well built, but I guess noone was ready for a semihollow body Fender.

Hello Grindenska,

70's Starcaster has to be the no.1
guitar I'd like to own. I've seen ratty ones
for $1500 and nice ones for $2500+++.
Every year there are fewer and fewer
available for sale. If Fender were to reissue
this guitar I'd do some liquidating to get
one, we can only hope. The custom shop
also told me earlier this year that they would
be more than happy to build one for me,
but the price was beyond my means.
Maybe one day I'll find a rat I can live with.

Cheers.

I saw one in Hard Rock New Orleans that belonged to Leo Nocentelli of the Meters. It was a highlight of my trip there, that and John Lee Hooker's guitar was close enough I could have played it.

So far, no '70s Starcaster owners have stepped forward.

If the guitar was "rare" from lack of sales, then "owners" would be rare too!

Hello Orvilleowner and All,

I went to a vintage guitar show today
in King of Prussia, Pa.
Not one Starcaster present.
Plenty of other great stuff.

Cheers.

I saw a band using one on Letterman a few weeks ago. I don't remember who it was, though. I think it was being used for rhythm.

Hello Pohayu771,

Yes, I saw a u-tube video with
a guitarist in a band playing one.
I'll have to search my memory banks.

Cheers.

I have a fender starcaster, it was my first guitar i bought about 3 years ago. I was great i still play it to this day. the only problem i have is trying to find out when it was made and how much it would cost now.

The guitar this thread is referring to is a Gibson-style semi-hollow Fender made in the 1970s.

Man, you gotta show us a picture of it!

What's the serial number? I don't suppose it's easy to check for neck codes or pot codes? Those would give you some dates.

One of the guitarists in The Killers also plays a Starcaster.
I saw them on Saturday Night Live playing one. I suppose the video's on Youtube.
He might have played one on the Letterman show not too long ago also.
