I have had my eye on a Jazzmaster for years, and I've finally put together the cash to pull the trigger.

However, I'm trying to decide between a new '62 reissue (american made) or a vintage model. Problem is, I don't have enough cash to get a really nice vintage example; I'd have to get something that's fairly well-worn, and certainly post-CBS.

I've heard a lot about problems with the bridges in older JMs as well. And while I don't mind wear on the finish, the fingerboard, etc., I can't accept a bad bridge.

Any thoughts?

I'd go with the brand spankin' new Jazzy...

I wouldn't trust a post-CBS as far as I could throw one...

I had a MIJ reissue Jazzmaster. I loved that thing to death but it had the infamous bridge problems. I'd fix it and then a day and a half later the low e string would be touching the fretboard. The upper side of the bridge began to sink into the body and the screw to raise it ended up getting stripped. I have heard rumors of putting a Mustang bridge on there to fix it though.

It's true, you can put a mustang bridge on a Jaguar/jazzmaster and it does help.

This however does not solve the problem of the lack of break angle behind the bridge, or the angle of the neck.

All 3 issues have been adressed in the new classic player jazzmaster.

How bad is the bridge problem on the '62 RI with regard to strings popping out of the slots? Is it something that would only happen with aggressive playing? I've been craving a 62 RI for a long time - didn't care much for the Classic Player. I'd be using it for surf and maybe some jazz. Do you think it would behave in those circumstances?

The Singer/guitarist in the band I used to be in plays a Jag and Jazzmaster. He used to always go a bit mad on the last song of a set, and his guitar bridge set up would be in a sorry state afterwards! He only used papaer thin picks too! (the white Jim Dunlops).

But he really did wig out!

I wouldn't not buy the Japan 62 (I nearly did once - but bought my 72 custom tele. The toughest choice I ever had to make!)
But I would really consider the Mustang Bridge!

I'd still go with the Classic Player! those revisions are just too sensible to ignore!

I pulled the trigger on a brand spankin' new '62 reissue 3 weeks ago, and I'm not sorry one bit. I've drooled over the JM for 40-odd years and I should not have waited this long.

The tech in the store where I purchased it did the set-up on the spot and I haven't noticed any issues with the brigde or the string height.

If you haven't done the deed yet, go for it.
