Does anyone own a Fender Mustang?

If so...tell me what you like about and what you don't

What do I like about my Mustang?
Everything.
What do I not like?
Nothing.

How's that?

Seriously--I do like other guitars better for some things, but the Mustang is great for what it is.

I like the short scale and small neck when I have something tricky to learn--I find it easier--then I can play it on other guitars. (I also like big chunky necks--so I'm not stuck on short scale.)

I like the out of phase sound--roll off the tone a bit and it's a cool blues tone.

The vibrato is nice and subtle--easy to use--I've never had a tuning problem with it.

What don't I like?
Sometimes I want more crunch or a humbucker sound--so I have other guitars too.

Hi!

I own a Mustang and here's what I think of it:

Overall, it has a very full and smooth sound, period. When you play with the bridge pickup it's very compact, but rich of tone. I also own a Jag, which has that sexy surf sound when you switch on both pickups. Well, a Mustang can do that also, but it sounds less 'plonky'. On that subject it's not really a match for the Jag. You can play great surf though, which I did. The neck pickup also sounds very smooth, clear and compact. With some reverb this will make you dream!

I play in an alternative rockband and with overdrive or distortion this guitar really rocks, especially with the bridge pickup on. Screw all people who tell Fenders can't rock. The cool thing is, that the original sound of the guitar is still hearable through the distortion, but that's a Fender thing I guess.

There's also a weird phase setting possible with the pickup switches. That sounds extremely single coiley and has that typical 'hollow' Fender sound. I rarely use this setting, but I can imagine you think up some songs where it sounds really well. If you want I can send you some songs I which this setting is heard.

The tremolo is pretty sensitive and direct, so when you tune to drop-d, you're really busy tuning. If you have it right, it will stay tuned for very long. When you use the tremolo while playing, the first few minutes all strings will end up lower, but after that they stay where they are. Oh, and you tighten the tremolo bar with a... (I don't know what's it called in English) thing that has six angles. Is this an inbus? We call it that way.

In my opinion this guitar is very Fenderish and nice. Also, I can't think of any annoying things. It has no hums, rattles or other nasty things.

So I think that's it!

Let me know what you think of it and please tell me if you want to hear the songs. Oh, that reminds me: that weird phase sound is very hearable in a song by The Cure. Listen to the intro of 'A Forest'.

Greetings,
Steven van der Steen

Thanks for the info guys

I'm getting the pickups replaced when I buy it anyway

A Duncan Lipstick in the neck and a Hot Rails in the bridge

I was thinking about getting a fixed bridge put on it too...do you think that is a waste?

I think it's a waste replacing even the pickups. If you don't want a tremolo, why buy a Fender? I guess I'm one of those guys that want to be the guitar just the guitar and nothing more... I would first try without all the mods and when you're not happy, you can always replace the things you want!

If you're going to mod it that much, why get a Mustang? get something closer to what you want...

(If you replace the pickups--keep the out of phase option, if possible. I use it most of the time on my Mustang.)

Yeah , I agree. The Cyclones are very similar and are a little difficult to find but worth it. I have one, A Squire, and I have been customizing it. New Tuners, atomic II, tex-mex on the neck, new paint etc. Or you could get a Duosonic reissue (it has no tremolo) and only spend $279.00, then add your pickups, and other mods.
You wouldn't spend as much for it in the end.
Just an idea.

I am also looking at mustangs, i really enjoy how much the tremelo can dive, and vice versa. Also the "hollow" bridge tone mentioned above is so unique...I want a real vintage but the reissue is what I'll settle for.

I love my ol' girl. I have owned her (or she owned me) since the early 1980's Smooth and clean, comfortable to play, the in/out of phase is so unique.

But I agree with zontar, if you are going to "trick it out", get a something closer to what you are looking for. Leave the vintage Mustangs original.

Otherwise... happy hunting!
